How do you guys typically grade a coin that has an AG/G obverse (honest wear) and with a solid F reverse? Supposing it depends on if you are buying or selling... :) Any experience with grading companies and a similar situation with a key date coin?
    Thanks!

I assign the grade of the lower side

Tend to agree. Hard to enjoy even a key date if one side is so drastically poorer. Avoided the coin, but it made me think a bit...

I disagree with either net grading or giving it the grade of the lower side. I believe split grading is not only fairer, but the preferred way. I would grade it AG/F, always listing the obverse first.

I always assign the lowest grade for either side. Now key dates are often over graded by the TPG - in my opinion only. Then according to the series and the strike you might have what looks like a lower grade side, when in reality it is the strike. Sometimes with lower grades it becomes tough to tell wear from strike.

Usually the Obv is more prominent in grading, so the grade would probably be closer to that

The grade assigned will be whichever side is lowest at the major graders. Condition of the rim is normally the deciding factor of either AG or Good.
BTW a coin with that amount of wear difference may have been in one of the old push in albums and cleaned several times on the obverse only check it for cleaning hairlines. I remember as a kid using a pencil eraser to make them shiney.
Key date coins can still be submitted for grading as it is good to have them authenticated as fakes of many of them are showing up too often.

Any and all coins must be graded based on the worst side. That is the rule that all of the TPGs use and the ANA uses the same rule.

    Yup.

You can write on your 2x2's "AG/F" for your own edification.

When you try to sell it to someone, they will grade it based on the worst side and make you an offer accordingly.

When you send them in to a TPG, you'll get it in a slab with a grade for the worst side.
