    I found this 1990 penny in a roll today, any ideal what happened or is this an error???

    That is what known as a 'cud'. Yours is huge. It can happen during minting when a part of a die brakes off and no design is impressed in the coin. They can be all sizes but yours is quite largre and should have a nice premium to ' cud collectors'. Congrats
