Ya I wish!!. I am not sure where there located .That was the whole point of this thread. Things led me to believe that the secret service had made him dissapear. There were several nice DMPL that I wanted to check out.
I can remember a few years ago a British coin dealer was displaying a 1933 $20 Double Eagle, only for it to be seized by the Secret Service.I heard that there was a bit of legal action. Can anyone please confirm this? I also know that the 1933 $20 Double Eagle that was originally in the collection of King Farouk of Egypt was sold at auction a few years ago.$20 was added to the final price to balance the books. Can anyone remember what price it went for, plus taxes? Aidan.
The coin would not be confiscated because it was not used in the consumer market. The coin itself If kept as a collectible and not used to pay for goods or services could not and would not be confiscated by any entity. In actuality the coin can be certified without penalty and put on the coin market without any problems. It carries the same alumni of the 1856 Flying Eagle and is only Illegal if used as legal tender.I know this as fact.
Then how was the 1933 $20 gold pieces confiscated?....I don't mean to be rude but you say you know if for a fact....is there an article or have you just researched this or how??? Speedy
Uhhhhh - the US Secret Service has stated categorically that they would confiscate any examples found.
Isn't the 1856 Flying Eagle 1c. coin a similar thing to the Sacagawea $1's that came in the Cheerios boxes - a pattern coin? Aidan.
Doug,a previous poster was comparing both the 1933 US$20 Double Eagle & the 1964 Peace $1 (if it exists) to the 1856 Flying Eagle 1c. coin. Aidan.
OK - but the '56 FEC was a pattern coin. The '64 Peace dollar was not - they don't strike 316,076 examples of a pattern coin.
Cool.....how was working with NGC?....did you also grade the coins or where you just a Authenticator? Speedy
Claw, Go to Europe and sell the damn thing. A 1964 dollar is about as illegal as half a ton of heroin.
Regardless of where you work or worked there was a hoard of 10 1933 DE's confiscated in the past year, so I don't understand how you can be so certain of what you say when there is recent evidence to the contrary. Click here to read the PNG article.
One thing is that we are talking about 1964 Peace Dollars....this article is for 1933 Gold pieces....I still don't total agree with the guy that said that they wouldn't be confiscated....but maybe he knows something we don't. Speedy
The curious thing about the coins discussed in this thread, and looking at it from afar, is that the USA Government has a hit or miss attitude with how it manages the coins supposedly not legally made or released. For instance the 1913 Liberty Head Nickle, produced without authorization by a mint official and then taken out without authorization. Legal to own. 1933 Double Eagle $20 coin, one is legal to own, the others are not. The one that was legalized was made so by special arrangement and auctioned, yet there were some 10 others seized from an owner last year. 1964 Peace Dollar, not legal to own, but rumored to have been bought by mint employees at the mint that made them during that year and some not returned. Not legal to own. 1974 Aluminum cent, was a pattern coin, examples distributed to the Congress for example, some taken as souvenirs apparently, not all returned to the mint. Rumored for a long time to be out there and then finally one did turn up and was authenticated, the Secret Service stayed out of this one though and just let it go.
Dont want it to spread too far but I am a Treasury #%&#@ and I know its hard to believe but as was the 1856 FE handed out as an example for a vote on legalizational approval,so was the 64 Peace.Hence the phrase monetary value(which this coin does not have).Note:not for resale applies in this situation.I am familiar with 2 holders of these rare examples in NJ.They are illegal as currency but because they were given out for approval they can be kept as collectibles. And I stress COLLECTIBLES.
To own NO.To use as Legal Tender Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A brilliant thumbs up to you.Smuggling is stealing and would legislate confiscation. The coins given out to the legislative body for approval are not beheld by this circumstance and can be legally owned by me or you.
