I have an NGC chopmarked trade $ that I want to cross over to PCGS. NGC gave it AU details (because of the chopmark) but mentioned no further issues. I want PCGS to grade it but if they find it's cleaned I do not want a "genuine" holder. Should I check the "do not holder genuine only" box? Or is simply stating a minimum crossover grade of AU-50 good enough? Thanks. (One day I'll figure out the subtleties of PCGS order forms)
Yes. If you do not want it in a Genuine Slab you must check that box. On a crossover, you must specify something in the "Minimum Grade" section. If you specify ANY, they just crack the coin out and grade it. If you do not want the coin cracked out unless it grades at least a minimum of AU50, then specify that as the minimum acceptable grade.
Questions: Do you know for sure how PCGS handles chopmarked trade $$? Do they not consider the chopmarks damage, or "altered surfaces"? And would the expense be worth it, to have it in a PCGS holder? Also, if NGC grades all chopmarked trade $ with "details", don't collectors & dealers factor that in? If it were me, I'd be tempted to keep in in the NGC holder--it's genuine, not cleaned, AU, sounds pretty darned good to me.....
Though i,am not really a coin guy, i would think that something like cleaning would Be a very simple question to answer especially when big $$$ are involved
PCGS does not consider original chopmarks to be altered or tooled surfaces. Unlike NGC they assign a numerical grade to chopmarked trade dollars assuming they're not cleaned or do not have some other underlying problem. That's why I'm interested in having them grade the coin. And since I have checked "do not holder genuine only coins" I will get the NGC slab back if PCGS determines that it can't be graded. Also worth noting is that between AU 50 and AU 58 there is roughly a $700 price swing. The number grade means a lot.
IIRC, PCGS will not slab coins with too many chopmarks. You might want to post the coin on the PCGS forums and/or PM Crypto79 or TradeDollarNut for their opinion -- both are experts, IIRC. Also, I thought you could specify "cross at any grade" on the form -- not sure if that includes "genuine" or only numberical problem-free grades. A call to PCGS customer service should clear that up in a few minutes. Good luck...Mike
chop marked is considered damaged, I think PCGS will put it on genuine holder. Usually it sells for much less than coin without problems.
http://cgi.ebay.com/1877-S-SILVER-T...88?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item27bbbd542c My coin is similar to this in that there's only 1 chop mark on the reverse. I would bet PCGS does grade it assuming they don't say it's cleaned.
You don't have to, and shouldn't, check the "do not holder genuine only" box. This is only used for those rare instances when a collector sends in a raw coin and says "if it can't grade cleanly I want it back raw, not in a genuine holder." (Why anyone would want to do this is beyond me. You can always crack it out of its genuine holder.) What you need to do is cross it. You can specify a minimum grade if you're okay with a lower grade than it now has. Otherwise PCGS assumes you want the same grade or better. If it can cross at your specified minimum grade PCGS will crack, grade and slab it. If it can't cross at your minimum grade PCGS will return it in its original holder. Under no circumstances will it come back in a genuine holder. Lance.
Thanks for that explanation. I actually did check the "do not holder" box and I indicated a minimum crossover grade of AU-50. I agree with you that a customer could always crack a problem coin out of a "genuine" slab but in my case I do not want PCGS messing with my NGC holder if it ain't necessary
Not a chance. the TPG's are smarter than that. No one would prefer a genuine/BB over a problem-free holder from another TPG. Lance.
I just thought I'd provide an update on my trade dollar crossover. PCGS crossed it (woo hoo!) and gave it AU50, my minimum crossover grade. I guess there are some happy endings at TPGs
