i wanted to post this somewhere well more suitable but i geuss this will have to work. im new to the site and have been learning a lot of info but one thing that keeps popping up that confuses me are the abreviations. one guy was talking about dimes being NIFC? anyone have a clue what that stands for? could anyone post like a list of abreviations and there meanings then maybe the post could be moved to freqeuntly asked qeustions?

You will also probably see this from time to time, NCLT = Non Circulating Legal Tender

Better numismatic references other than NIFC are

    NC (non circulating)

    NCLT (non circiulating legal tender)

    Clinker

I'd first seen it as "Not Issued For Circulation", which seems more descriptive to me. "Intent" is fuzzy -- who didn't intend for them to be circulated? -- but "issued" is more concrete (the Mint issues many coins for circulation, but issues some others only to collectors).

For example, 1969-D halves were issued both as normal circulating coinage and in mint sets. 1970-D halves were issued only in mint sets -- they were "not issued for circulation".

Since this got posted to "Coin Chat", I guess it is not US specific - and elsewhere the term "intended for circulation" (or not intended) is actually used. :) See here for example: http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance/euro/cash/coins/pdf/types_coins_en.pdf Must admit though that I have not seen the abbreviation "NIFC" before. "NCLT", yes ...
