well, i've only ever pulled one 1954 and it's in baaaad shape. that's my elusive one from the 50s.

  6. I've only gotten two, both from the same lot off of eBay. I'm actually missing the 56-S, 57-S, and 58-S, though

They're tough to find. I'm good up to '54-S' but that' s it for the ' S's '. I have a about 700 hundred wheaties in rolls which I have to recheck now.

I'm afraid the only place you'll be able to get a 56-S, 57-S, or 58-S will be from Chinese Counterfeits Unlimited (or one of their eBay distributors)

  9. Lol yeah, that's probably why I've never found one :D

oh ya the 55-s.what a cent to get.i have a bu 55s that got 30 years ago from a old man that lived near us.he gave me a whitman that starts at 41 to 74s and 95 % are bu.i had to take them out of that the folder was discoloring them and ruining them.

It's not unusual to not find one in any given bag or lot of wheats. You have to go all the way back to the 39D for the next lower mintage.

The 1955-S suffered the same fate as the 50-D nickel. People knew it was going to be the last of the S mint cents and they were hoarded big time as soon as they came out. When I started collecting in the early 70's it was difficult to find a circulated piece but BU's could be easily had for two to three dollars apiece. A few years latter the hoarders started dumping their hoards and the price of BU's dropped to about a quarter apiece.

^This exactly. I bought one in the 70's for half the price of a silver dollar, and in the mid 80's bought a roll for almost the same price. The 55s was going to be a great all time rarity, and after the silver crash many sold BU rolls just to raise cash. I bought rolls of 50d nickels at the same time. Small dates were also cheap then, but I was never interested in those.

Try finding a circulated 55s cent or 50d nickel. THat is the greater rarity. :)

In my August 1969 issue of Coinage magazine, rolls of Unc 1955-S cents were being offered by advertisers for anywhere from $12 to $17.95 each, and uncirculated 55-S singles were being offered for about 40 cents to 65 cents each. My 1970 Redbook lists a price of 75 cents for Unc.

    Looks like I overpaid.

I paid about $3 in 1976 for a bright red example. I must have overpaid too. I still have the price on the 2x2. I also have the receipt in 1983 for a BU roll of them for $5 a piece, and the 50d nickel rolls for $11.
