I bought a series of teen pennies from a seller on ebay. A couple of them looked nicer then what I have in my collection, so I figured for $2, why not? Being a good buyer (or so I thought), I saw they had 100% positive feedback, were a 'powerseller', and had lots of other pennies listed with people bidding on them.

I got my pennies today. They were TAPED to paper.

I went back and looked at the auction, knowing that I didn't bid on coins taped to paper. Upon looking closer at the feedback, there were more than 20 people in the 12 month+ range that gave this person NEUTRAL feedback who said theit coins were taped as well. Shame on me for not going in and reading feedback I guess.

That being said, ebay won't let me leave neutral or negative feedback yet and I don't see the point in returning them, I would still end up in the hole by having to pay return shipping.

So, two questions: 1. Will acetone take the tape residue off? (And please don't turn this into a cleaning/conserving thread - no one wants a coin with packing tape wrapped around it or packing tape goo all over it!)

    2. Am I justified in leaving this seller negative feedback? Why in the wouldn't other people leave the seller negative feedback for taped coins??

    Ugh!!!

At the price you mentioned I think your talking about common circulated coins so the tape should be no big deal. And yes a quick rinse in acetone will remove tape goo.
I would be of the nuetral feedback option myself.

I would leave negative feedback. The coins are not in the condition as when you bid on them. Maybe a helpful e-mail to the seller suggesting not to use tape in the future might help (but I doubt it). Acetone will take the tape residue without harming the coin too much. The caveat is that you have to use straight acetone, NOT fingernail polish remover. There is actually a thread on this forum regarding removing tape residue with acetone. Good luck.

Normally I would agree, but he has already been told in his feedback 20 times that people don't like the tape and he is continuing to do it. Time to step it up to negatives so he gets the message.

I have received taped coins from different sellers numerous times. They all were circulated, all not easy to get on eBay, all cheaper than expected. There was no serious damage visible to the eye, and i couldn't say for sure that there will be any kind of damage in the future. In one case, the thin layer of glue residue i removed with water, ear cue tip and a lot of patience.

The sellers had 100% positives and it's not easy for me to leave the first negative and ruin it for the seller. All this led me into leaving positive feedback but mentioning taped coins problem and that's its a bad habit.

I would say you got the right to leave negative if you are not satisfied. The seller keeps doing it despite plenty of neutrals, and it feels like he ignores or doesn't care about dissatisfied buyers.

And then how do you remove the vasoline? A dip in acetone I guess.
