I have a 2000 Cheerios penny that a friend gave to me and I am facing a bit of a dilemma with it. 1st Do I send it in for Grading? Do I open it to find out if I was one of the lucky few that got one with the wide AM on the reverse, Do I leave it in the sealed package it came in and risk it getting PVC on it? Does anyone have any input on this? Thanks.

As far as I know no cheerios cent has ever been found with a WAM. The Cheerios Cent is just a normal cent. The Cheerios dollar on the other had is almost always the prototype reverse.

Thanks Conder101 but at the same time it is the year of the WAM and some have been found. Then you do have all of the ones that havent been opend as of yet so there is a chance that the Cheerios WAM is out there. Let us hope LOL.

But if you open it and it is a WAM, how do you prove it was a Cheerios cent?

You can always send it in to an error coin group like coneca or elsewhere. I am sure they will verify or at least explain the fact. I have 2 of these and am not opening mine. The search is still on for the Cheerios Sacagawea though lol.

Does being a Cheerios cent improve the value? I thought that was only for the Sac Dollar since the reverse is different...

The cheerios penny is worth about $5 but if it is a Wida AM then the value is obviously more.

Well if you send it in for grading, will they slab it with the designation "Cheerios Cent?" If so, then you wouldn't have to worry about it becoming just regular old 2000 cent.

I'm sure there are many people who are asking the same question...I got this from about.com.

A Cheerios Penny is a year 2000 Lincoln Memorial penny that was put into a Cheerios cereal box for a special promotion in early 2000. The U.S. Mint provided 10,000,000 freshly-struck pennies, plus 5,500 brand new Sacagawea Dollars to General Mills, who placed them onto plastic-sealed cards which then went into cereal boxes.

Yes, but you have to submit it still on the promotional card; otherwise it's just a 2000 cent. That's why if you remove the cent from the promotional card and it's a WAM, it won't get the Cheerios designation. For mine NGC labeled it "2000 Close "AM" 1C Cheerios Promotion"

Well, the OP should just send it in to get slabbed then, I guess. If its a WAM, nice. If not, then, it's a little waste of money, but still, you found out.

If you open it,you will NOT get the Cheerio designation, I would send it in.

    Edit:

If I remember correctly, there are die markers that may distinguish the variety

Regardless something has to be done because if you leave it in the packaging than you run the possibility of having the coin contaminated by PVC won't you?

i also never heard of any Cheerios 2000 being "wide am". I heard that the 2000 Cheerios pennies were made at the begining of the 2000 year cycle and the 2000 "Wide AMs" were produced later in the year so that is why no "wide am" were never found.

So, if you open the packaging. The value will drop to one cent but if you send it in to be graded it could get a nice grade. Or just leave it as is and yah have a nice ~5 dollar coin.

...there's definitely early-year 2000 WAM's out there, one of the 1999 WAM dies was carried over into 2000, I believe that was the rarest 1999 WAM die?

Ken Potter did a lot of work on the whole thing.

Here is my question. I have heard about how no one has heard about the cheerios penny being a WAM but if there are still a bunch in there original packaging than how can you back up your remarks. I have a friend that has 20 of these and I have one and I have yet to come across one that has the reverse exposed so I can't say that I agree with no WAM cheerios penny. Who know for sure though. One day we will all find out with solid facts. Until then I will have my cheerios penny maybe even graded lol.
