    Hey,
I wondering what you guys think they would grade.
Also, what variety is the Half Cent and how do you tell??

1828 Half Cent (13 stars) - Included 2 other close-up photos, of maybe a DDR and another, there is a little spike of metal off one of the leaves.

    1903 Indian Head Cent
    Thanks a ton!!!!

I agree with B12 on the 1828 Half Cent grade but can't make a difinitive determination on whether it is a DDR! I am leaning towards the 1903 Indian Cent being a Proof and if so, I would say PF-55.

I would call the Half Cent a VG-10 to F-12, just looks too weak on the hair and other high points on the coin. As for the Indian Cent, it looks to have been cleaned a while back and is beginning to return some of its natural color; so I'll grade it AU-55 to MS without the cleaning.

I'd say the half cent would grade VF20. As for the IHC, it appears in the pics that the coin has been damaged and as such would not be gradeable. Grading on detail though I would say it is XF40.

    F-15 for the 1/2 Cent

    XF-40 for the IHC.

The half cent is not a DDR. It is a Cohen-3 variety. What you are seeing is either repunching or longacre doubling, and can also be seen on the example from my collection below....Mike

Wow - if PCGS & NGC graded as hard as the folks on this board there would be a universal outcry! LOL

Yeah, perhaps a universal cry of relief :eek:hya:

Would you rather have a coin that was properly graded - or one that was overgraded ? The grading companies get it right sometimes - but they also overgrade & undergrade sometimes. The real trick is to know which is which.

Blindly accepting the grade assigned on a slab, even if it is assigned by NGC or PCGS, is a mistake that all too many collectors make. Thus the saying - buy the coin, not the slab ;) You see - that saying applies to ALL of the grading companies.

Hmmm... VF-25 on the 1828 and XF-45 on the 1903.

I'll throw in my 2 cents on the Indian Head and say that with all 4 diamonds looking quite clear and the surfaces and liberty as well the grade would be AU50 or better.

I say the Indian is a VF-39 because it has slight wear onm the tips of the feathers. An easy sign of this grade.
