I'm trying to diagnose a coin...can't find anything on the interwebs. Anyone more prepared than I am at this point? (I don't have my cherrypicker's guide)
Here's a photo - maybe someone can look it up if they have their CPG Here's a closeup of the date. Appreciate the help!
Well most obvious is the die crack from the rim to the left to the base of the 1 across the bottom of the 186 and then down to the rim below the 9. A die chip has also formed at the bottom left of the 6. The date is also repunched with the repunching showing strongest at the top of the 1 and the 8.
Excellent! Thank you guys for the confirmation (I can guess all I want, but I'd prefer to confirm it with something solid.) I'll try to get a photo of the entire coin this morning...would you mind throwing a ballpark value out there once I do? Thanks!
Only values that I have are for Unc. examples, but here are some cross references that may help you. BR2399, KN10, FS2-5, & FL69-1o1r
So, do you think this is a coin worth certifying? Does anyone here collect 2 cent error varieties and possibly wouldn't mind telling me exactly how hard this is to find and what the demand might be for it?
Way to go. Good cherry pick. Not an easy variety to find. To slab or not to slab? - I dont know if the plastic (slab) would bring enough extra money if you were to sell it to justify the expense.
I also have an 1869 error not mentioned in flynn. There is a straight thick raised line from the one o'clock of the O in OF to the rim. Appreciate any thoughts. BTW just picked a ms63 1865 KF-P6-RPD off eBay.
Indeed. Breen-2399, pg.240. Breen claims that he was supposedly the first to have discovered this error. But that's according to Breen. LOL. ."Kliman 10. Usually in low grades; see introductory text. Always with some stage of the die crack. Note traces of extra 186, evidence of use of 2 date logotypes. Discovered by this author, Oct. 9, 1954, at the New England Numismatic Association convention, Harford, Conn." Breen lists this error as a 'Very Rare,' or by his scale, only 13-30 known. (pg.707) Hope this helps. Cheetah
My copy of Kliman is on the way. I appreciate the info. My coin will grade xf/au so I guess its a keeper.
If I'm seeing what you're seeing, it looks like a die crack to me. None of my sources list an error with similar phenomena. It may be helpful to post a larger photo of your specimen. From the perspective here, the existing photo is difficult to inspect.
