Hey CoinTalkers! Just thought I'd create this thread for a little bit of fun. I was wondering what your guys' favorite heraldic eagle design for a US coin was. Any year, any denomination, any commemorative. Everything is excepted. I'll start by sharing my favorite; 1984 Olympic $1... ... The eagle on the reverse of this coin majestic. It is BY FAR my favorite eagle on a US coin. So, what's yours? -Brian
The 1984 commem is one of my favorite eagles as well. Here's a pic I took of a proof version awhile back: But I think the eagle on the reverse 1918 Illinois commemorative is even better:
Here's my favorite. Not just the design and execution of the eagle but also the broken chain on its leg and what it represents.
The reverse of Laura Frasier's 1932 quarter that won the design contest, but was refused because 'a woman has no place designing coins'.
I really like that reverse, so many of the heraldic eagles look like they are more the product of the taxidermists art than a symbol of freedom and strength.
I copied this from a concurrent thread. It is my favorite Eagle. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r209/ldhair/Cent/Img_0174.jpg
It has to be the obv. of the Texas commemmerative or the rev. of the , aside from things posted already
I really like the reverse of the Kennedy Half Dollar.. Not a whole lot of eagle, but the entire coin itself is beautiful.
Funny you say that, illini, because I was debating whether to post the Illinois commem. also! They are both my absolute favorites, and I'm not just saying that to agree with you. This was my honest-to-god opinion on both designs before even creating this thread. -Brian
