Just wondering if it's worth getting this graded as these are worth above melt value at Fine and above. What kind of a grade do you guys think this coin would receive? Please disregard the other coin as that one has a hole in it so its clearly just melt value at this point and not even full melt value at that.
Just to clarify: these are not my coins as I am contemplating buying the 8 Escudos one but don't have any knowledge of colonial coins
If you don't have any knowledge in the colonial field, please don't buy anything just yet, especially since this is a chunk of "gold" at hand here. Besides, the surfaces don't look right?
Can we get a picture of the edge? Also do you have a way to weigh it?? I'm not entirely convinced it's bad... It might be real but with issues.
One difference 'twixt struck pieces and cast fakes - a cast fake makes a dull thud when struck lightly by another coin, but a struck piece (genuine or not) makes a ringing sound.
I have not examined the coins personally as the person selling these has 48 more gold coins he is looking to sell. He's a friend of my father's broker and my father asked me to to weight in on this. Obviously the safest way is to just ask the guy to certify these and I'll cover those costs if they turn out genuine as I would have done that anyways. Thank you for the helpful advice though, I'll try to see what else he has and will do further research as well as try to physically examine them. This person lives close by so it's not like this is a long-distance transaction but this forum has been very helpful and I really appreciate you guys taking the time to respond.
