I just finished the first-draft of my Coin Collection website called "The Color Of Money" -- basically highlighing my interest in colorfully-toned coins -- and I am looking for feedback. I know I will probably get complaints about the font size being too small, however I didnt want the text to take up so much space -- and wanted to coins themselves to be the "stars" and not the words. I figured poeple could always increase the text size in their browser option if they couldnt read stuff. Also I imagine I might get some grief for posting two of Daniel Carr's overstrike coins, the 1964-D Peace and 1975 Ike. Problem is I have been unable to find any beautifully toned version of either coin -- and I thought the overstrikes did at least present a near perfect MS68 or so version of each type and a somewhat interesting story -- but anyway no color on those, sorry. Still I know that the purists will balk. I provided a side-by-side view of all my toned coins at their actual size (for anyone displaying at the 96dpi standard) -- in the format of a navigation bar at the top. I think it's cool to see all the coins in a single view -- allowing a better sense of their relative sizes. You can click on those true-to-life sized coins at the top of the page to jump futher down the page to see the medium zoomed view of each coin -- or simply scroll down the page manually. Also you can click any of the medium zoomed coin images further page to load an even larger version of the coin in a pop-up window. Note this is just 1 long page, not multiple pages. I thought about splitting it into multiple pages, but then I think there would be too many short pages -- and I think the site would be more difficult to navigate. Impressions? Thoughts? How can this be improved? https://mindstar.com/coins
Very impressive and well laid out. I think you did a great job and having it all in one page is much better than having to navigate thru pages. Congratulations, I'm now going to read everything on there
Impressions? I'm very impressed. It's a beautiful site and a beautiful collection. Thoughts? I'm wondering if you'll be adding more. How can this be improved? I love toned coins and would like to see more. PS. I noticed you purchased several from The Penny Lady (Charmie). She has some great stuff. I bought a few from her a while back but nothing of the caliper you have there. Congrats on a great site.
I just noticed that some of those coins look very familiar too. Awesome collection. I should show off my collection like that too
I really like the site. I like that the coins are on one page and the text works well to me. As far as the coins, I cant keep my eye off the 1917 SL quarter, beautiful. You've got a great collection!
Thanks for all the great feedback! I like that some voiced their opinons on their favorite coin. It's interesting to hear which coins move people. mat, the 1917 SLQ is one of my favorites!
I'm a fan. At this point the only two things I was slightly disappointed in were that the "Historical Perspective" section could be fleshed out to either be short and sweet (and related to toned coins) or expanded. I get the feeling that this could either be a daily/weekly blurb, i.e., "fun fact" or something that changes regularly or perhaps you were just marking its place. Second - I really wanted to see bigger photos of your beautiful coins. I click on the images - and there's only a marginal increase in size. Coins like these...I want to ZOOM! Nice site~
Wow! You've outdone yourself WingedLib. I think your site has a very classy, professional looking presentation. Your coins are top of the line lookers pretty much across the board. I like the way you highlight and describe your interest in toned coins. But the best part for me are the personal touches you've added, such as your description of your introduction to the hobby by finding an old Whitman folder at your local "five and dime", and your subsequent start on collecting Lincoln Cents. Your stories about roll searching in the 60s as a kid and still finding lots of silver coins are very nostalgic. And then you tie it all together with how you describe your progression in collecting to this day. All those vignettes compliment the great photos and add a human touch to your coin collecting story, one that many other collectors can relate to, I think that's part of what makes this such a great hobby. My three favorites are the 1917 T I SLQ, the 44 D Walker, and the 83 O Morgan NGC MS63.
That's a very nice presentation of some really fine coins. I would have liked to see a high quality Peace dollar and an Eisenhauer dollar before the two fantasy pieces.
Both your website and collection are amazing! You should be very proud of both, classy and informative - Tommy Likey! J
I applaud all your work and creativity. Your dedication to coin collecting (especially toners) come through loud and clear. Like others, I sure would love to have the coins linked to larger images. I'll give it a 70 with a + and a *.
Very nice presentation!!! One thought I had seems to be the opposite of others comments. Having all your coins on one page makes for a fairly lengthy loading time for the page as a whole. You might consider having each denomination on a separate page to reduce load time.....Either way a great site & great coins!!!!!
stldanceartist, good points about the historical perspective sections. i think you are right, they are a bit lacking in "pointedness". racebannon, thanks! yes, i always enjoy reading about people's stories so I thought I would add that. i totally agree about the 1960's -- i have always viewed that decade as the end of one of the great eras of coin collecting. I like your "favorites". mralex, I will keep up the hunt for a nicely toned Peace. You just cant find them. robec, thank you! I have to hand it to you, you found the weakness in my camera-phone photos -- my iPhone struggles making big pictures. They are a good size for coin talk though! poppee, i know there are pros and cons to one page vs multiple pages. if my collection grows much more, I might have to switch to a multipage format. i know that load time might be a problem for those on slow internet connections, but high speed internet access is becomming so much more commonplace i had less concern about it. ML94 and midas, thanks! It's interesting that nobody had any thoughts on the info at the end of the individual coin descriptions -- who I bought the coin from and the toning premium paid. I wonder if that information is interesting or just a waste of space. I know for me, it would be helpful to get some idea of the market premiums and the names of a few of the better dealers -- but maybe that's not everyones interest. Thanks again for all the feedback! Your comments were all very helpful!!
