Ok, I have recently decided to begin actively collecting coins again after a couple year break (I sort of let school get in the way  ). Anyway, I was going through a couple of my old proof sets and my 1979 set caught my eye. I noticed that the mint mark on the Anthony Dollar looked more like the "Clear S Type 2" variety rather than the more common filled S.

I bought the set several years ago from a little coin shop that I hung around in and always assumed it was the more common variety because I paid about $10 for it.

But, looking at it now, I'm not too sure. The mint mark doesn't look like the "filled" variety that I have seen pictures of. Anyway, what do you guys think-which of the 1979-S Proof Anthony versions do I have here.

Thanks for the help and I'm sorry for the poor photographs. I hope that the mint mark shot is good enough.

That is a type 2. Nice cherrypick.

Nice find and great price. Hold on to that one. I want one but not for the asking price.

    Great find.
I picked up an 1982 proof set with the clear S at a pawn shop years ago for $10

Wow, I can't believe that. The funny thing is I bought this set back in like 1999 when I was just starting collecting (I was like 14 then) and I never thought anything about it until today. I always figured that the guy who sold it to me knew what it was but I guessed he missed it. I remember wanting to buy it because it was the first yeah with the Anthony Dollar. So, thats a neat discovery for me, especially since I have had it for 5 or 6 years now.

If it were my set that thing would be cracked and on it's way to PCGS (because I'd sell it later).

I've thought about cracking it out but I don't know. I sort of like it where it is to be honest. I've never broken up a proof set before (although I did break up a mint set once for probably stupid reason but thats OK).

Maybe he didn't miss it. Believe it or not, to many dealers it's just another modern - clear S or no clear S. In their eyes the type 2 is worth no more than the type 1 and anyone who would pay more for the type 2 is just plain nuts. I once had a dealer point out a '79 set to me where every coin was a clear S - he sold me the set for $16. A bit of a premium yeah, but not much.
