Why does the Philidelphia mint tend to have more errors than Denver?

I was wondering why a majority of major error coins seem to come out of the Philly mint? look at the Double Die pennies from 1936,1955,1972,1983,1984,1995. I know we see a few from the other mints but it just seems to me that Philly makes some great errors for us to look at. I think, and I may be mistaken, that the Presidential Dollars with missing edge lettering and inverted/ doubled edge lettering are more abundant in coins minted there as well. Just Curious.

I have wondered that as well. Almost started a thread about it. What is the deal?

Aren't the master dies all made in Philadelphia? If so, then maybe minting starts there a few weeks before other mints due to shipping the dies across the country & more errors are produced/shipped before the issue is caught/fixed. LOL, its just so out there it may be true. I'm sure there is data as to when each coin minting starts, what's the ratio between P& D as far as coins produced?

Until about 1997 all the dies were made in Philadelphia. Possibly it is the extra "inspections" that the dies received while the mintmarks were being applied allowed them to catch more of the errors. The Philadelphia dies didn't get mintmarks and so weren't looked over as closely. Also when you go back to the earlier years Philadelphia made the majority of the coinage. More coinage, more dies, more chances for error.
