Are you younger then 18? Post how you got to collecting :thumb:

I watch a lot of antique shows, so I decided I was going to collect antiques. When I was looking on eBay, I searched antique coins, and it was love at first sight! My mom gave me an Eisenhower, and I was amazed! She said she had a old one, but the oldest big dollar was 1971, so I thought she thought she had it. After I filled my head with a bunch of knowledge (Maybe to much!), I went to a dealer and bought my first coins. They were a 1879 Morgan and a blank nickel, which I still to this day! Thats my story! (P.S.: The old dollar my mom was talking about earlier was found later, a Peace )

Well i have always been the kind of person to find interest in many different areas. From collecting zimppo lighters, to music, to science, eventually i somejow or another got into magic. Earlier this year i was on my local mmagic shops website and he h ad a section called coin magic:real silver. I clicked on it amd was immediatley drawn to a 15 dollar walking liberty half dollar (a lot of magicians like to use junk walkers because they look hreat and thesound silver coins make is preferable and easier to work with over clad) and i bought one. When it came in the mail i just couldnt take my eyes off of it. I started looking at coin info online and was ooened up to a whole world i never knew existed. Barbers and seated halves, silver vs. Nonsilver and i thought it was amazing. So i started collecting and soon realized that there was a show in my town every single month. Nit including thE whitman show 2-3 times a year. So theres my story. Your stpry is pretty awesome. Btw im 15

I got interested when the State Quarters were out, and my Mother told me about the Philadelphia and Denver Mint. So I wanted to start collecting those by "P&D". I ended up collecting every issue in each Mint and I got interested in older coins. So I went to a local coin dealer, after reading up and getting advice, I made my first actual "purchase". I bought some Mercury dimes, some older Wheat cents, and an 1880-S Morgan Dollar. That was also when I first found out about the 1909-S VDB and 1914-D cent, I was amazed that a little Wheat cent could be worth over $1,000. And they showed me an 09-S VDB in an NGC slab. And I still have the Mercs and Wheats and my Morgan, and I knew from that day forward, I had started something that would last a while!

Both of my grandfathers collected coins, and they were always giving me coins to try to get me in to collecting. I would look at it for a few seconds, then set it somewhere and forget about it.In August 2010, me and my parents were helping clean out my grandparents old shed and we found a crate of my Dad's old stuff. Normal things like report cards, yearbooks, etc. I was getting bored when I saw a couple old Whitman folders. I opened them up and saw Lincoln cents 1909-1974. They weren't complete, but I was really interested in them. When I saw the 1943 steel I thought, like most people who don't know about coins "WOW, this is rare!" We were almost finished when my Dad found a 1909 plain. I went home and did some research, I found that the 1943 was only worth a couple cents and when I saw the price on the 1909 S I looked for an S under a loupe for what felt like forever. I didn't find one, but from then on I was hooked.
