A box of change was given to my husband and I several years ago. A woman had passed on and her children didn't want to take the time to go through them. In them I found this coin. I have held on to it because I thought it looked like it was in amazing shape and it was really old. At least compared to any coins I had come across. I would really like to know what kind of shape it is considered to be in and a ball park figure for possible value. I plan to keep it but just curious. Any opinions are greatly valued. :smile 1861 New Brunswick 1/2 cent
To start off, I don't know anything about that coin. Not great with with grading Victoria coins, maybe it's a F, or VF. Somebody else could do better, as I said, I don't really know. Anyway, though, you really have to change that 2x2! It looks like it's been in there since 1963! To avoid damage to that coin, change out that 2x2.
I had thought about changing it out of the card a couple times but since I had never really had a coin in one I wasn't sure if I should or not.
Wowser, this is definitely a nice coin. There were less than a quarter million of these made, and it's in decent shape. I would say it is around a VF-20 but just barely. but I think a lot more people will agree with F-15, it does look like it's been cleaned so that will probably subtract from the sale price a bit, I don't think you'd have a hard time getting 250 - 300 for it. Awesome find for such a random story. EDIT TO ADD: And yes, get it out of the cruddy ole flip asap. The rust on those staples, and the old crispy flip plastic is doing that coin no good.
