It must be nice to be able to afford such a fine set. It amazes me how platinum, eventhough it has never been used as a monitary device, for the general public that is, has become so popular in the numismatic world.
Before collecting coins I only knew about platinum because of its electrical conductivity properties, which are better then gold, which is better then silver. Neat who that works.

Love to have a set like yours. Maybe one day.

    Hello Walter Allen...

I can completely understand where you are coming from! This is my first 4 coin Platinum Set ever...I have the 1/10 th ounce versions all years which was not too bad $$ wise. I have been saving for 2 years to get this guy and I do appreciate having the means to purchase this. As most of the folks here know..my young son will more than likely end up with it as time goes by..what better investment is there? Whenever the urge hits ya for that fancy dinner or a night out, a fine bottle of wine or a ball game...stash the cash and before you know it you have enough for that once in a while set!

Good Luck Walter..you can do it as well!!

The AGE collection is pretty slow right now. I'm getting laid off work in six weeks, and I'm not spending much on $100+ coins (zero, actually) :( . Silver Eagles are my speed these days.

Did you have to give personal information (per Patriot Act) when you bought your platinum set ?

I did order my 2006 Proof Set from the Mint a few days ago. Their web service seems to be greatly improved.

I cancelled my order. That is ridiculous. I bought a very nice Morgan dollar instead.

On a side note, the main reason that platinum was never used as a coinage metal was because it wasn't considered to be valueable enough. There was a time when platinum was used as a substitute metal by counterfeiters of gold coins - it was much cheaper than gold. Today of course, those counterfeits are worth more than the originals.

Hey Rickie, now I know I should have joined the Marines instead of the Air Force!:)

I bought some platinum when it was about the same price or lower than gold but sold it on the way up.
