This is up on Listia and was just wondering what some of you think about it. The pics will enlarge some if you click on them. Thanks folks. @Jack D. Young would appreciate your info also. Thanks. Free: 1846 Large Cent, Circulated, Year of Mexican–American War, Refundable, Insured, Ships FREE - Coins - Listia.com Auctions for Free Stuff The points value is under $4.00.
P.S. While you are there, check out some of the other offers, looking very sketchy overall. Use the points to get a value like I did above.
I have no idea what these "points" you're referring to are, or what Listia is, but that large cent looks real enough and has nice detail. The color I'm more dubious on. It looks to have been cleaned. Note the halos of darker toning around the stars, for instance, or how the field under CENT looks rubbed to a lighter color than the surrounding area. And that photo could've come from anywhere.
Thank you for the reply Lord M. Listia is a trading site where no money is used to get things you want. You offer what you want at a point value that is close to the dollar. In other words 1,000 points would be one dollar. You accumulate points and then get what you want with no money involved. The reason I asked about this coin was that I got an 1846 from this lister for under $4.00 in point value. I posted here and tagged Jack for his opinion and he said it looked very similar to a counterfeit he knew about. I'm now a bit leery about the listers offerings.
I confess I have no idea about how this site or its point system works. You’ve got me looking closer at the coin. The 6 in the date looks a tad blobby and slightly odd to me, but whether that’s a tell, or a marker of some known variety, I don’t know. If it’s a fake, it’s sophisticated enough to have fooled me. (Maybe that’s not saying much.) Only the slightly wiped looking surfaces (and maybe that 6) look a tad strange to me, and even then not extremely so. I’ll defer to the more experienced advice you get here.
The large cent has AU sharpness but darker and lighter areas which suggest a light cleaning. Compare it with this piece, which is graded AU-55.
Thanks so much for your insight and replies. I was lent to thinking the same thing on those you replied on. Just too good to be true. The fact that she also offers U.S. mint stamps so greatly reduced reminds me of all the fake ads for same on Facebook. This is typical of a Chinese source. This, plus all items are coming from California suggests fakes and where many other ads originate from. Thanks again Lord M, your'e the best.
I have run across a few very honest and reliable sellers there and it's been a source of much of my silver stacking the last few years. The silver, I know to be real as these few dealers have been using Apmex and other known trusted silver dealers and the sending's have come directly from the trusted sources and not from the sellers.
