I have a coin I bought many years ago from Coincraft in London.
    I was described as...1995 UK 5 ECU gold flashed proof,mintage 2500(error)
Does anyone know anything about this coin? Is it in any way collectable/valuable?

Back in the days before the euro was decided on there was a lot of discussion about a unified currency (Believe it or not the unified currency was originally supposed to have been in place by Jan 1989) and the denomination name most frequently proposed was the ECU. (European Currency Unit) Many of the countries of the European Unit struck up fantasy coins denominated in ECU's for sale to collectors. None of these "coins" were really serious proposals, just a way of siphoning some money out of the collector community. The ECU never really had a chance because there would have been complaints from the other members because France once actually had a denomination called the Ecu.

    the error aspect

Thanks for hat Conder101, but I really was enquiring into the 'error' aspect of my coin. And of course, attempting to see if there was an underlying value as a result.

I cannot tell you anything about your piece, but don't expect much in terms of value: As far as I know, "flashed" means about the same as "plated", so this will be a base metal piece with an ultra-thin gold layer. Also, while the Irish ECU pieces (1990) were not legal tender but at least issued by the Central Bank, the British medals were made and sold by private companies ...

People do collect them but again sorry I don't know anything about the value. I have a couple of Ecu's in my collection but I bought them for the silver content and also because I liked the designs and not as coins (I also collect medals etc LOL)
Why not contact Coincraft direct and ask them, the shop is still there and run by the same guy's :D
