Congrats zaneman!!! Nice to see someone I have corresponded with make it bigtime. Don't worry about where you will start in the organization. You'll get there. We can't all start out as the president. Just getting your foot in the door is quite an accomplishment. Jim

Congrats! I would love to get into a grading service and do some work. Family ties and college won't let me do that though.

Hope everything works out for you. Maybe once you fix the labels errors at PCGS you can move on to ANACS and do the same? They must be blind over there.

I have no doubt that you will make it up to the grading room.....when someone has an open mind and is willing to learn they can learn anything they put their mind too.
You have started our on coins at a much faster run than I did....and that is great....be sure to ask any question and if you still don't understand it say you don't.

I hope that PCGS isn't like ICG and they will let you keep on collecting....???

Maybe someday you will be going to shows with PCGS and we can meet face to face!!!
you have a job that most collectors would love to have....I haven't decided if I would like it or not....I hear that the grading rooms don't have any windows and that there are 6+/- guys in the same room.....as a county boy I don't know if I could put up with that
But if I decided that I would want to be a grader I think I would go to FL

Some of that is my problem too
I don't want to go to College as college isn't going to help me in coins.....but my famly has always been pretty close and no one wants me to move too far

I'm pretty sure I am not revealing any secrets of the company, but yes, there are no windows in the grading room. The room isn't that cramped either, you probably are about 6 feet or so from the guy next to you, and have your own little cubicle.

 

Yes, congratulations. I love hearing about people striking gold in their aspirations. Way to go!

 

Zaneman, a huge congratulations to you! That is very exciting! I truly applaud you for going after something you really wanted and just doing it. I have kicked myself a time or two for not doing the same thing. Trust me, you will be better off with no regrets and not wondering "What If?". I think working for PCGS will be a wonderful experience and I have full faith that you will be able to work hard and take on whatever job you'd like there. California will probably definitely be a change from wherever you're moving from, but I'm sure it's just like anything else...you just have to have an open mind and get used to the differences (positive or negative). Best of luck to you and your fiance both!

The great things about living there; You have so many national parks within driving distance that you can go to a different one each weekend. Definitely drive up the PCH on a nice day. Las Vegas is exactly 4 hours from LA by car. Catalina Island is a must. In and Out burgers are better than they sound. The fruits and vegetables are like nothing you've ever had before. They are enormous and cheap. Eat up.
I lived in LA for 4 years and was in three car accidents (avoided many others by inches). They don't have the slightest idea how to drive out there so be alert. If someone happens to miss a turn, they don't go around the block, they back up into oncoming traffic. I knew the driving had gotten out of hand when I saw several cars go through a flashing red light without stopping because they had gone "between" the red flashes.
If the place you live now has any sense of community, breathe it in now because the concept doesn't exist out there. Everyone out there is from somewhere else and you won't have the foggiest notion who lives right next door to you. If you are going to live in a zip code beginning with "900" be prepared to pay around 3000-4000 dollars a year in car insurance even with a perfect driving record.

Congrats Zaneman. Its always nice to see someone take a job that interests them. Welcome to SoCal, wait until you see the traffic. But its worth it.

 

Actually, ICG does not allow you to collect coins they grade if you are a grader. I believe NGC does. I think PCGS does also. What they really don't want you to do is to buy and sell.

Having said that, I have a strong feeling :secret: that several of the graders at all the grading companies still collect.

 

Congratulations! Your head must be spinning. It's amazing how much your life can change in the course of a year.
