I recently finished a Peace Dollar collection, and for my birthday, my mom gave me a 1939 E German 5 Mark coin. I really like it and it is in AU condition, and I recently found out that it is a key date in the collection, worth $110 dollars, and my mom found it in my old great aunt's safe after she died. The coins are within my price range, have about $15 of silver in them and there are only about 30 in the set. What do you guys think, these or Walking liberty halves?
If you truly want to start a unique collection, the German mark coins would seem like a fine choice. Whether its this or walking liberty I think you can do no wrong. Best of luck to you!
I would rather get one done, then start the next one, that's just my opinion though, who knows, I may pick up some ones that I cannot resist while collecting the other.
I would go with the German and would love to see some pictures of your progress. Good luck to you and I would be more than happy to keep my eye out here for you as well.
Alright, I think I'll go with the German coins! Thanks for help making the decision! I will keep you all posted on my progress
And a North and a South too. Except that in the times of the German Empire/Deutsches Reich, they were both (or all) part of the same country. The "E" is the mintmark of Muldenhütten (in Saxony); that mint was closed after the end of the Reich. Christian
I would go with the Mark set too. Everybody has the waking liberty. Best of luck with whatever you choose!
I also would go for the German 5 ReichsMarks. Sounds cool and unique. There will be a set of Liberty Walkers waiting for you to complete when you're done with the Marks. Good luck.
That 1939 is of course a Nazi-era coin, & according to my Krause book has that (in)-famous symbol on it. Historical, but personally I might focus on the pre Nazi-era coins. The German 3 Mark silver coins are well worth collecting/accumulating too. Do you have a Krause book? You'll need one if you get into this. Good luck!
I would go with the 5 reichsmarks too. You already have a nice one to build from and you may learn some valuable history along the way. Then collect the Walking Liberty halves after you complete the reichsmarks set. Have fun.
You ask this question in the World & Ancient Forum, it is no surprise that everyone here would opt for the marks... myself included, but if you had posed this same question in the U.S. forum or even the Coin Chat forum I would bet a lot of money that you would have probably gotten many more people opting towards the walkers.
collect what you like. pay what you can afford or save up for great grades. I would save up for better grades. harder dates/mint marks might leave you no choice money wise. have fun with it. I love 5 mark german coins with the stylized eagle on it. great design.
