Hi Folks, Managed to get this yesterday in a UK auction and I think it's pretty special and should slab around MS63/MS64. An excellent addition to my growing Canadian collection.
Keeping that one quiet for now....lets say that UK auction houses and buyers in general overhere don't know the value of Canadian coin, especially ones like this in very high grades from the Victorian era.
wish they had auctions like this near me, the only coin lots they have in my local auction are either junk or gold lots neither of which interest me. really nice coin. does having them slabbed increase the value enough to cover the costs of sending them to the US for grading? or do you do it just so that they are protected?
nice coin, i agree marbury the price of canadian coins in the UK is ridiculously low in comparison to the UK coins of the same years.
Heritage just opined that if it comes back at MS64 it would be worth approximately $1,000 .......looking at past auction results in the US and Canada I'd be a bit disappointed with that but still an opportune purchase. Helps to make up for a few of my less wise purchases in recent weeks like the British West Africa 2 shilling which I paid more than twice market value for and my Chinese Memento dollar which came back slabbed as cleaned (ouch!). By the way folks, if you're wondering why your World Coins are taking so long at PCGS it's becuase the World Coin aparachicks are all in Paris and don't come back until next week.....they need to 'sign off' on your submissions.
Maybe it was kept in the UK as a collectable Good luck with the re-grade. I sometimes wonder about nice high grade coins like this one. I sometimes wonder how a coin in 1888 made it from Canada to the UK in such nice pristine condition. Then a possible answer comes to mind; Perhaps the coin never left the UK in the first place. It was made at the Royal London Mint & maybe it was kept in the UK as a collectable from the get-go. I have a 1905 coin from Haiti that somehow made its way to Connecticut USA in pristine condition. Then I discovered that the Haiti coins were minted in Connecticut so maybe it never even left Connecticut.
Yea.....maybe you're right............but having shown the photos to Canadian numismatists/dealers they opined MS62 at least.......how they come up with AU58 I have no idea....
Best of luck with your re-submission to NGC. It is a beautiful Victoria 10 cent. Here is a Newfoundland Victoria 10 cent from my collection. It has a very low mintage. While looking for the 10-cent photo, I also found photos of these Peru & Haiti coins. These are in pretty good shape and I bought them in Connecticut. Later, I discovered that they were minted in Connecticut.
Not sure if I'll go for regrade but can't do any harm........was talking about moving over to NGC in general. My two 5c Eddies I posted on CT came back AU55 which was also a bit disappointing. I understand that NGC has a better rep for consistency....so I guess I'll just experiment. Have straits settlement 1903 dollar and a Chinese Junk dollar (1934) for grading but will wait until I get more auction results. Bidding on two Canadian 1872H 25c in super shape...hope to be succesful with one......toning makes them look like two different types of coin.
I think I would agree with AU58 based on the photos you posted. Maybe 55, can you post larger photos? There seems to be wear right in the hair above her forehead and at the crown of her head. Nice coin though, assuming you paid the right price an AU58 is definitely something to be proud of.
OK....Not sure how you are accessing the photos I posted but when I clicked on them they fill the screen and are massive.........so clearly not possible to post even larger ones....cost approx £200.
