I posted this on another forum and got mixed results. Some said it has been cleaned and some gave it an AU grade. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.:hail:

I agree it was cleaned and is in an AU grade. I only say it was cleaned based on the obverse image.

It looks to have cleaning hairlines, but also has luster still. AU-53

Let me ask, just because it has been cleaned does that take away from the value of it???

Yes. However, this is a common date in the series. IMHO...this coin is only worth melt because it has been harshly cleaned. Had it not been cleaned, it might be worth a couple dollars more.

Thanks, Im really not interested in value of it cause it came from my father( he was most likely the one that cleaned it). However if I had coin worth $500 in good shape and it was cleaned like that it would knock the value down alot??? Im just asking these questions to learn the ins and outs of this hobby. I just started collecting and plan to buy more coins soon and want to make sure I get the real deal. Thank you so much for the response.

Yes, it would be worth less, even as a key date. However, because of the popularity of some key dates, your 'cleaned' example would still get a lot of needs for those type of collectors. I've personally bought several nice MS64's and 65's for reasonable money. Merc dimes of those conditions and common dates can be had for $15-50 easily.
