I was looking through a box of cents the other day, pulling out copper, 95, 98, 99, 00, to look through for errors, and any wheaties or canadians, and found this weird cent. At first glance it looks like a 1978 S. It is in awful condition, but I scanned it and even with the close up I still don't know what it is. Is it an S, so a proof, that somehow made it back into circulation and is now in awful condition. Or is it a D, that just got some crud on it in a curve shape? What do you guys think? img380.jpg img380small.jpg

An S that has been damaged...

You can tell by the last curve of the S on the bottom.

There seems to be an outline of a "D". I would say it's a PMD 1978-D.

dcure2002 Old but not that old

    I'm gonna say it's a 1978 D with "crud" (PMD)

Looks like someone tried to alter the mint mark, like the tried to carve in an s with some soldering, but the letter still takes the shape of a D

    I'd say it is a damaged D.

Rims appear rounded as well, so I would also go with damaged D.
