I am about to collect my last few peace dollars for my collection. I liked them because they are silver and big, and not too expensive. I am willing to spend about $40 a week, I am pretty new, and the peace dollars are the first set I have ever tried to finish, even though I am basically done with 1909-2011 cents. What should I collect next? I was thinking maybe a type of silver half or something, maybe a barber coin? I cannot decide, thanks for the help in advance.
Oh, also I am not interested in collecting morgans. I have a few, but they are more expensive than peace dollars and there are may too many in the set.
Franklin halves? They are a shorter set and still easy to get. You can make the process a bit more challenging if you go for 'FBL' examples.
I am collecting circulated Liberty Walking Halves. I have two complete sets of Vol. 2 & I need 6 coins (yes the tough ones) to complete Vol. 1. I have been getting a lot of them at a little over spot melt prices on eBay. You just have to keep a lot in your watch list & be available to bid the last 2 minutes that the aution is ending. I got some nice AU to BU Walkers this way, also.
I'm partial to Mercury dimes, but it is a very large set. You could always do a short set, like 34-45 or 41-45. For $40, you can get very nice slabbed Full Band examples for most years, too.
+1 to the Liberty Walking Halves idea. They are great looking. You can break them into sub sets. Collecting the 41-47 Walkers would be easy and you can get nice looking coins in your budget. Actually, I think they are better looking than ASE's.
I am enjoying doing a type set of key and semi key coins in low problem free grades. a lot of coins needed to complete a set are generally considered generic in almost any grade. So you end up with a bunch of generic coins. otoh a 1912 s nickel in any grade is never considered generic; a 1921 D half in any condition is never considered generic.
You could always go for complete sets of Flowing Hair Halves and the Draped Bust Halves, you know,if you were rich.
Believe it or not, V-Nickels are fun to collect, aside from the 3 key dates, but I put a set together in about a year and a half by using ebay, metal-detecting and coin shows. It was a blast and my cost averaged out to be about $10 a week. The set is from G-4 to F-12, but it's still a complete set. You mentioned you have a set of Lincolns; I have several sets myself and they were also fun to put together. You might try Walking Liberty Halves; they aren't to costly. Washington quarters are another option; either way, have fun!!
I have also been working on collecting the Peace Dollars! I have 16 of 24 all of which are BU -MS w/ exception of my 1921 which is VF+- XF! My favorite full collection are my Jefferson Nickels in AU-MS!My Roosies are all complete w/ exception of a 1950-P!
Yep, go with Walking Liberty Half Dollars, most are still affordable unless you're looking for specific grades. Some ppl can afford to do that but I never do. I look at coins and if I like what it looks like and it grabs me by the passion noids, then I buy. If it happens to be slabbed, then that's all the better. The main thing is passion! No passion, no life. :thumb:
