Cleaning can take many forms; therefore cleaned coins do not all look alike. The best approach is to study as many genuine coins with orignal surfaces as you can so you will learn what an uncleaned coin should look like.

Cleaned Lincolns are easy to spot, but white coins are much harder to tell. I agree with the post above, study the genuine, uncleaned coins for awhile and you should be able to tell the difference. Also, look out for retoned coins; although it gives some coins more eye appeal, it's still altering the original state of the coin, thereby decreasing the value greatly. Good luck!!

The quick answer is to look for paralleled hairlines onthe coin if they go from the fields onto the devices the coin is possiblycleaned. Lines in the fields that stop at the devices are most likely diepolish lines.

Very true Hobo. I have listed a cleaned Morgan Dollar just as an example.

Cleaned: Notice how this Morgan has lost it's original luster and looks very flat and dull, also note around the letters and date as you can clearly see the original toning.
