This coin is consigned at a local auction on Sat. At best there is heavy enviromental damage but I think it may not be legit. What do you think?
Hard to tell, could go either way, but i,am wondering about why only one side of The coin is showing heavy damage and the other very slight? i think i may pass On this one!
Looks real to me at a glance, although the problems are obvious. To be sure, I have at least one Large Cent of the same type in worse shape. This would be a good time for Marshall to chime in if he's lurking about.
Do my eyes deceive me, or does that date indicate 1793 ? If so, it's either a forgery - most likely an altered 1795 - or an outright counterfeit. Hard to say looking at the pic on my iPhone.
After comparing them with other 93's the top of the 3 is way too short, I think .900 got it right as a altered 95
Went to the auction today to look at the coin. Just using the Red Book it looked closer to the 1795. Also the edge was smooth, no lettering or reeding. The auctioneer and one of his helpers got into a bidding war over it and it wound up selling for $285. Thanks for the input guys.
