Hi, recently I seen a coin on the show pawn stars it was a 2 dollar Newfoundland gold coin, That sold for like $3000 but it was in a fancy case with a serial number that was apprised by some coin company.. I have a gold coin like the one on pawn stars it's year is 1880, and until I saw the coin on pawn stars I always thought it was one of those tokens you get for different places or something along those lines, It was left to me by a grand parent who never collected coins (or so I thought). Anyways I know that the one on pawn stars was in that case and was apprised I believe but the one I have is just a coin that was kept in an old tabacco can along with a hundred dollar bill from the 50s and some Pins with different things on them, So is this coin worth anywhere near the one on pawn stars and if so where would I go to sell something like this, I'm from a small town and we don't even have a pawn shop or anything line that. Any info. Would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome to CT Condition is key to the value of your coin. Pictures would be needed to figure out condition, and if its authentic.
As jester said, condition is everything. Likewise, it is a coin that has been heavily reproduced and copied/faked. If the coin is real, scrap gold price is about $150, but the retail could be anywhere from $1000 to $5000 .. condition being EVERYTHING. If you are in Canada, consider sending the coin to CCCS or ICCS for certification; if in the US, send it to PCGS ... google any of them for an address and certification costs. You won't get the full value out of the coin, if it is real, unless it's certified, because so many fakes are floating around. You could also send it to one of the CAND (Canadian Assoc of Numismatic Dealers) a 20-30 dealer Assoc of the upmost integrity and honesty .. none of them will hose you while some others may.
Hey thanks every one, For great info. Yeah later on I might just send it to one of the Authenicators you listed but for now I done some online research and With the help of a friend of a friend determined that it is real gold and the correct weight for the 1880 coin but I also understand that it still could be a fake (but at least it's worth it's weight in gold if not anything els). It's been a pretty exciting few days I think I may have caught the coin collecting bug, What a rush to discover a part of history from that long ago, and from what i have learned there were only several thousands ever made. It's crazy to think that something that was worth only $2.00 has grown in value so much. Once again thank you and if anyone has any more info it would be great to more about it.
