(I had this in the WRONG forum)
I saw this pop up and knew it wouldn't last long so (I) fixed that, LOL. Waiting is always the hardest part after the purchase:) Here is a picture of the coin. We were just talking about him. One of the NUT emperor's I think. Elagabalus 23mm 12.85g AR Tetradrachm of Antioch, Syria.

The unusual aspect is the eagles head. It faces right...

    Pretty neat coin!
I found the Ebay listing of the above coin which states that it is listed in Prieur as number 255.

Here is a description of a similar coin:
    SYRIA, Antioch. Elagabalus.
    218-222 AD. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 11.46 gm).
Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right
Eagle standing facing, head left, wreath in beak, star between eagle's legs.
    Prieur 252
Prieur suggests that this issue may have been struck at Emesa, the site of Elagabalus' rebellion against Macrinus.

Yes, this is one of the few 'ancients' I've bought already prepared. Nearly all of my other's I've cleaned myself. Sometimes with disasterous results... :D

First time i've seen one like that for Elagabalus or with the eagle facing to the right. Mind you, I haven't seen all that many.

Here's the one I bought about eight years or so ago. It was one of my first forages on ebay and in the BPP era (before paypal) :)

The Wildwinds data base is great but not complete.
I couldn't find this exact coin in it.

I don't know if the direction the eagle is facing is meaningful or just artistic license on the part of the particular engraver.

Elagabalus was a fairly ordinary guy.
    Almost.

(?) Prieur 253 is the only one I saw that has a bust remotely like your one. All the rest (bar one) portray Elagabalus with a long neck like my one. None of them show a reverse with the eagle facing right. Still, that doesn't mean there aren't any out in the wild. Just that Wildwinds hasn't documented any auction of them.

Anyone got the relevant text available? :)

Thanks. Yeah, I'm looking forward to getting it but it's not as fun as finding then cleaning your own. However, chances of one like this slipping thru in an uncleaned lot is NIL. I have a couple of Dupondis's and two Sesterius's (sp?) but this will be the first Tetradrachm I've ever owned.
