I know the new shield cents have been out for a while now so what do you guys think. Do you think it will be the new wheat? How long do you think the series will run? Basically I just want to know what you guys think about them. Are you saving them? etc. I personaly dont think they will replace the wheats. Wheats are just to cool.
Personally I think its a very retro design and I like the overall appearance. I prefer the wheats myself based on the rich history and design for its time. I just can't shake that the new shield cents are zincs and the the government produced millions of them.
I actually like this design over many of the others that were under consideration, and it looks better in hand that on the computer screen. I am guessing it will be the design until the cent is discontinued or until 2059, whichever comes first. TC
I personally love the new design. As for hoarding them...nah. I'll stay with a P, D, S for each year though.
QUESTION: When did wheaties as a design type become popular? ANSWER: Well after the advent of the Memorial cents and only slowly. QUESTION: How many Shield cents are being struck? ANSWER: Bunches (which I suspect translates to over a billion). So even if/when the Shield design stops being produced there's going to be boatloads of them available. Most of us will be pushing up daisies before they even START to be like wheaties.
I really like the design. I try to put away two BU rolls of P and D each year, just out of habit. Other than that, I see no reason to hoard these as they are produced by the billion. The "new wheat" as you say, I believe, are the copper memorial cents through 1982 (part way). Because their copper content is about 2.7 cents, these are "the new wheats" and will increase in value simply because of their copper bullion content. JMHO
Thanks for all your opinions. I to agree that the shield cent wont become collectible for a long LONG time. I just thought this would be a good conversation piece.
Perhaps it's just my particular age, but this is all I can think of when I see one of the new designs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jTHNBKjMBU&NR=1 This one too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6f_W2hOgaQ&feature=related
I think it will be a short series, since at SOME point I hope our idiots in Washington realize the money they are losing by trying to make what inflation has made an obsolete denomination. I heard at one time 99% of all cents weren't circulating, they just accumulate in peoples coin piles. We simply need a coin redesign and drop cents and 5 cents completely. A dime today has less purchasing power than a wheat cent did when it was discontinued in 1958.
Historically, the first year of a new series or major design change has ultimately become desirable and valuable. These may too, in 100 years or so. Probably not in our lifetimes. Lance.
I'm not sure I understand your question. Wheat Cents were discontinued over 50 years ago and are rarely found in circulation today. Memorial Cents replaced Wheat Cents and Shield Cents will eventually replace Memorial Cents. Are you asking if Shield Cents will replace Wheat Cents among collectors? If so, I doubt it. For one thing Zinc Cents are inferior to Bronze Cents. For another Wheat Cents have a more attractive reverse design and are older (which in and of itself is attractive to some). 25 years minimum (per the law) unless Congress mandates a change. 50 years if the powers that be decide to stay with the tradition of 50 years per reverse for the Lincoln Cent. Less if the Cent is discontinued. No.
What ? The first year of a series is often widely saved and cheaper. 1909 VDB cents 1883 NC nickels 1913 T1 nickels 1916 -P Dime 1917 quarter etc.
Widely saved, sometimes. Cheaper, not usually. We all know it comes down to mintage, surviving numbers, the different Mints, etc. But it wouldn't be hard to come up with many examples of first year coins worth quite a bit more: 1913 T2 nickels, 1909-S VDB cents, 1807 CBH's, 1793 lg cents, 1916-D dimes, 1916 SLQ's, 1932-D&S qtrs, 1859 IHC's. No one's saying this will happen with the shield cent. This is just musings and fantasy. But if the Mint stopped producing pennies I wonder about the 2010 shield cent in 100 years. Lance.
Just think, in 30 years or so, a new generation of collectors will be combing through rolls to find those elusive Memorial cents. (Well, that is if cents are still around then)
