And by far my favorite piece that came from a famous collection. Erlanger wrote the book on Nurnberg medals. Well his collection was used to write the book after his passing.
This has opened up a can of worms! We might be a while. A few to start. Henry VI Rosette-Mascle halfpenny, ex Longbottom & Lockett W/SA D23 halfcrown, ex Wigan, Webb, Murdoch, Hamilton-Smith, Vaughan Morgan, Ryan, Vincent, Brooker and Morris collections. Unique. William I PAXS penny, GODESBRAND ON BA(TH), ex Beaworth hoard 1833, Durlacher, Carlyon-Britton and Lockett 1859 Decimal Pattern halfpenny(?), ex Terner l 1601 pattern 'Pledge' halfpenny, ex Earl of Pembroke (d1733), Addison, Murchison, Foster, Firth, Nicholson and Alderley collections. Probably given to the wife of the 2nd Earl by Elizabeth I as she was a former lady in waiting and favourite of the queen. 1824 uniface halfcrown struck in Barton's Metal, ex Whetmore and Adams
I don't really have much in this department. The best I can do is a Birmingham Workhouse 3d token Ex-W. Norman, 1905:
Thanks. I like a good provenance too. It's nice knowing where a coin has been in the past, and in any case, a provenance has never detracted from a coin's value. Adding names is a one way ticket. A few more: Edward III Transitional Treaty halfpenny, ex Miss P Woollnough, Longbottom, Lockett, North & Lord Stewartby 1797 restrike pattern halfpenny, ex Peck & Rogers Charles I 1645 Oxford F7 halfcrown, ex Mrs Street, Marsham-Townsend, Montagu, Hamilton-Smith, Lockett, Willis and Morris collections Charles I Exeter 1645/4 D17 crown, ex Carlyon-Britton, Morrieson, Yates, Lingford, Barr amd 'Swaffield Family Collection' Commonwealth halfpenny, ex Marshall Aethelred Last Small Cross penny of Cissbury, CIOLNOD ON SIDESTEB, ex Spink and Conte collections. A Hobson's Choice type for Saxon mint collectors, with 39 coins of this type known (most in museums) and a solitary Cnut Quatrefoil in the BM
AV 3 Tari d'oro ND Messina Mint (unpublished) unique???? Hohenstaufen Rulers of Sicily Konrad II von Hohenstaufen 1250-54/ HRE and King of Sicily Acquired thru Savoca Auction/ ex: Baron von Brück Coll.
Ah, but here's the fun bit. The coin itself is 8-9mm in diameter, but it came with a ticket that's huge.
1700 halfpenny reading GVLIEEMVS, ex Pegg & Nicholson. The latter put together the best collection of halfpennies assembled to date. 1860 Weyl pattern halfpenny with milled edge, struck in tin. ex Murdoch and Roberts. Unique. 1859 pattern decimal halfpenny struck in cupro-nickel and with a dotted security edge. ex - Baron Philippe de Ferrari la Renotiere (thankfully known as 'Nobleman'), Brand and Freeman collections. A few more. Henry III 1b long cross penny of Canterbury (c.1247). ex Sazama collection Charles I Worcester sixpence with tower mark both sides (c.1644). Not a thing of great beauty, but excessively rare. This appears to be one of 2 available to collectors, the other being the Lockett (lot 2556) coin. ex Montagu, Ready, Hamilton-Smith and Bole collections. Briot First Milled issue penny (c.1631-2), ex-Morrieson and Joyner Sticking with Briot, a Hammered Issue halfcrown. ex-Morrieson, Lockett, Asherson, Hunt & Morris collections. This was the discovery piece documented by Morrieson in the BNJ just over a century ago. This one is a treasure. The Dr. Jacobs collection sold at Heritage several years ago and I was not in a place in my collecting life where I was in a position to be bidding, still on active duty and living overseas (in Spain at that point). Later I was able to obtain an example of this coin raw in a Japanese auction--a very unusual date for the type as they were supposed to not be released. I got mine in a slab with NGC, but still have the JNDA certificate attached. Eventually a collector friend who did bid/win on several lots offered this example to me. A point 'upgrade' which wasn't the relevant part, but I truly did want at least one with this pedigree. Interestingly I have seen a couple more nicer specimens coming out and at auction but I would never trade for the grade on this one. In any case, Dr. Jacobs was a young Army officer in post-war Japan, who was a collector at heart. He, with a few others, saved a huge amount of Japanese numismatic history from the melting pots. Later he co-wrote an early English language book which was one of the very first references I collected. It's still on the short list of books to have, though there are other references one should have. But everyone should have a Jacobs and Vermeule! A few more. 1644 Charles I shilling struck at Exeter, ex Murdoch, Burstal, Lord Smith of Marlow, Brooker & Morris collections Sticking with Exeter (possibly), a barrel garniture undated Civil War crown, Besly type B2. ex Banes, Morrieson, Paget and Cornwall collections. This is currently attributed to Exeter, but I can see the case for this being Truro given the T shaped stops in the legend based on this feature appearing on the A1 crowns which everyone agrees is Truro. 1573 sixpence with mm. Acorn, the reverse over Ermine. ex Dupree and Bole collections. The latter had the best sixpence collection assembled to date. Edward IV second reign halfgroat struck at the London mint. ex Hugh Howard (d.1738), Webb and family by descent, Lockett and Lord Stewartby. All Ed. IV halfgroats of London are rare, irrespective of the mark.

He was a naturalized citizen of Brazil and a Brazilian numismatist who has written dozens of books, articles and monographs on coins and medals. He was the founder of the Brazilian Numismatic Association on January 1, 1951 and its president from 1951 to 1988, and was the founding partner of the Ibero-American Society of Numismatic Studies.
A 1788 Soho pattern halfpenny struck in silver plated copper, Peck 964. ex Brand and Norweb. Not one of Mrs N's finest, but it was cheap enough. 1718 Silver Proof(?) halfpenny. ex Hoblyn, Bousfield, Parsons, Peck, Noble and Gregory (for which read Baldwin's basement) collections. This piece matches the description of Peck's piece in his book with the exception of the weight. Footnote 1 on page 200 describes the weight as 157.3 grains, but the file cuts and general description matches. As the weight of this is 115.7 grains, it appears that a typo was made, with the 1. of the footnote being part of the weight. This lower weight is actually in the right ballpark for a halfpenny on a thin flan, with the weight increased pro-rate from that of the thin flan proof farthing. Henry VII facing bust London halfpenny with mm. halved rose and lis. ex Shuttlewood and rare. Aethelred II CRVX penny of Southwark, the moneyer is Aethelweard. ex Doubleday Edward IV heavy coinage halfpenny of London. ex Lockett. Charles I York mint halfcrown, struck from Besly dies 2F. ex Hamilton-Smith, Lyddon and Mitchell collections
