Hey guys. You all obviously know how expensive gold is but still i would like to invest in some gold besides the normal silver. A lot of people on ebay sell little vials of gold shavings. While these vials are practically weightless tjey are also vvveeerrryyy cheap. If i acquired enough of these, say like 100 vials and took the shavings somewhere to be melted and poured into a round or bar or something, do you think it would add up to anything subdtantial?

Long story short, you lose. These contain very little gold, with no specified measurement. eBayers sell these for way over the small amount of value these have. Add in refining fees and you've lost. If you want to own cheap gold, go for something like 1 gram bars, or mexican two peso coins.

My Mineral society bought several thousand of these to sell at a county fair. Paid less than .20 each. The amount of gold leaf in each one was such that you would need more than a few thousand to just make 1/20 ounce of gold. Gold leaf is so thin that it curls and looks like a lot of gold there, although the purity is suspect for sure, and the cylindrical holder magnifies.

Much better off to buy 1/10 ounce or so gold bullion. The purity is designated, IMO.

One ounce of pure gold can be hammered into the equivalent of 100 square feet of gold leaf. So one square foot (144 square inches) of 24K gold leaf would be worth about $15, meaning that one square inch would be worth about 10 cents. I have one of those vials and would estimate that maybe it has 2 square inches of gold leaf in it, or roughly 20 cents by my calculation if the gold is the standard 22K.

I have a whole sandwich bag full of that stuff. It weighs one ounce more than an empty bag so there's one ounce of something there. I took it to a jeweler to have it checked out and got a call a week later to come and get it. They couldn't even open the bag without the stuff flying around everywhere. They didn't want to chance losing any of it so they didn't even want to test it.
