1948-P Franklin Silver Half Dollar Certified by SGS: Is SGS a legtament grading service and is this a good deal for $28.95? http://www.amazon.com/1948-P-Franklin-Silver-Certified-SGS/dp/B00310MVFI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307410053&sr=8-1
Not as legitimate as NGC and PCGS. ANACS or ICG for that matter. Many would call them "illegitimate....
Always heard SGS NOT is high class grading. There are some better looking 1948 Franklins on eBay right now SGS = Self Grading Service ! http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_from=R...ranklin+half+dollar&_sacat=See-All-Categories
SGS is a self slabber found on eBay. Their coins are typically well below the grade shown on the label and often are problem coins. In this case, since there is no grade listed it makes me even more nervous. Best to stay away from SGS coins.
Taylor, Check out this site for some decent deals on slabbed coins: http://www.cheapslabs.com/shop/index.php TC
SGS is a garbage grader who grades all moderns, made within the last 15 or so years, as MS/PR 70 DCAM/UCAM but they sell for lower grade prices. Not consistent, not reputable, not worth the headache as you may have trouble crossing the coins over.
Just as a reminder to buy the coin and NOT the slab. If you can grade the coin inside that slab, and it's reasonably priced for the grade you think it deserves and/or the coin. You may still consider buying it. (Unless of course you have the motive of putting together a high class slabbed set...of which case, nevermind.)
Remember that because it really is the coin you're buying. The slab is just somebody's opinion. Learn to grade and you'll be miles ahead of the game.
