All hail the wheat penny

The Wheats are my favorite right now and I have all but two (09S VDB & 14D). I am now upgrading, as much as I can to Red through out the set. I know I can't do all the set in red, but it ads a whole new dimension to my Lincolns when I can pick up a red at a reasonable price.

What's ironic is, when I re-started my coin collecting hobby back up a few years ago, I had a lot of the Lincolns I pulled as a kid. So it was neat to get them all organized in my Intercept album and think, "these are from when I was a kid". Well now I have upgraded/purchased most of those and now the majority of my Lincolns are stuff I have bought in the last few years. Someone on this forum once called that reverse collecting.

There is so much you can do with any set, beside just filling holes. Like I said, now my Lincoln strategy is two fold:
    1) Get those two I don't have
    2) Upgrade to RD as much I can

Someone mentioned a 22 plain a few post ago in this thread. I recently bought the 22 weak D just to fill the hole. One day I will get the real McCoy. You can get the weak D's for under $100 in great condition.

I like to look at this You Tube video once in a while. This individual has a great set.

Nice YouTube video. Contests on being so close to having a full set. Does that include the double dies? Those are the hard ones to get. I don't have a 22 plain referring to the above mentioned. I have been hoping I would find it in a roll of wheats one day but so far nothing. I will say if you fond one in circulating then you need to run out and get a lotto ticket!

No, right now I am not going after the major varieties like the 55 Double die, I have picked up a few, but that's not my goal right now. I am filling up the IS album as it calls out.

You've gotta try something different. My current average is 13 wheats per box. It's a bit skewed because of my box with 77 in it, however, my worst box ever had 2 wheats in it. Usually it ranges from 8-14, or thereabouts.

Show me a great coin I need and I'll happily overpay for it.

Greetings wheatpennyguy and welcome to CT. My experience might lead to some insight. I started my wheat collection a little more than 55 years ago. For two years - '56 and '57 - I searched 10k per week about 45 weeks per year. On fridays I bought 2 $50 bags of loose pennies that came out of my hometown's parking meters. I assembled a set in F-XF missing only the S-VDB, 22 plain and 55DD - remember the dates, I only searched wheats, mems. were not yet in production.
Over the last 10 yrs I decided to try an MS63 to 66 set. At first I only bought RED but I soon realized my budget would not be enough and I compromized to 64RB. To date I'm only missing the 15-S,26-S, and 28-S. This endeavor has cost me just over 55K so far and there are a few I would really like to upgrade. All are NGC or PCGS slabbed and the date run '34 - '58 are all MS67.
The lesson here: be careful what you wish for - it can be expensive.

Amen to that CT brother! The wheat design is timeless and distinctive. My overall personal favorite is the first year 1909 VDB. Although not rare or expensive, it is a hallmark coin every collector achieves in acquiring. Since the beginning of the year roll searching I've amassed about 450+ wheats cents, its a fun endeavor to say the least! Congratulations on the set.

Oddly enough, I found a 1922 no D cent while roll searching...that being said, it's condition was somewhere between looking like it had been shot out of a cannon, and being run over by a team of horses..pretty deplorable.
I don't know how it got into a roll, but I can make a guess or two..(a kid with sticky fingers being around a collection that wasn't secure enough is the first to come to mind).
Now...what are the chances of finding a coin like this or something similar?
Slim and none....and slim just left town.
Even in the condition it was in, it still went for $405 on ebay....
