Hey guys, I just took some photos of an 1854 half dime I have had for a while and realized that this is indubitably a die clash of some form of fashion , at least on the reverse (check the outlines moving through "m" and the number below the letter "E" (I'm assuming an "8"?). Is this die clash ridiculously common? Some sort of VAM? Was interesting enough to pique my interest; thoughts appreciated. Also, how would you grade this coin? Are features typically a bit more muted on clashed coins? Thanks in advance! PS clicking on the photos should enlarge them, or at least that's how it works on my tiny laptop...
Whoa, well said, gentlemen! Sorry about that... Photos are now appended to the original post; you should be able to get a somewhat larger version by clicking them. Thanks for calling that out- I would have been scratching my head a few hours from now wondering why no one had replied....
Yes, die clashes are failrly common on small coins from that era. The smaller and thinner the coin the more common die clashes are (because the dies comes very close together when striking the thin planchet and clash when a planchet does not enter the coining chamber). No. VAMs are varieties of Morgan and Peace Dollars only.
