Hello Folks----Can anyone tell me where this coin comes from? And, approximately when it was issued? Any info would be greatly appreciated as I am completely stumped. Thanks. Bob [supertooth] I would be forever grateful. Chris
On the first pic I think I see the term "HISPANIA" (on the right from 1:00 to 5:00) which would indicate Spain.
I was thinking Hibernia(Ireland), but probably is more likely to be Spanish (does look like an S instead of a B)..hope a real expert shows up soon. Now I need to know too.
I think this may be a Philip IIII Spanish Netherlands coin - City of Roermond. But the R and the M seems to be reversed... http://translate.google.com/transla...ae+munda%22&hl=en&biw=1024&bih=558&prmd=ivnsb
The R and M are reversed because - An interesting variation is marked with the letters on either side of the shield incorrectly.
I'm not quite sure that I understand what you mean. Are you saying that an actual variety was struck with the R & M reversed? If so, do you have any further information about it? Chris
The first coin pictures are too small to identify correctly (IMO) but I believe this is a Atocha coin. The coin design in use during the Atocha time period, referred to as shield type, incorporated the Spanish coat of arms or shield on the obverse side and a cross representing the union of Church and State on the reverse. The elements of the design between the three major mints, Mexico City, Lima and Potosi, although similar, have features which make differentiation possible. The other small issue I see is that is has areas which are worn where the mint location would be. I also think it is upside down. Sorry I can't provide any more info towards this coin Chris. I wish I can see a clearer closeup of it to give more info.
I just learned from my friend that this coin is actually copper like the other photos that were posted. Does anyone know of a resource for this variety which has the R & M reversed? Chris
