Does anyone own a leaved variety clashed die Mercury Dime? I have been searching for a gem state NGC or PCGS example for years without any success. The best I could find was this photo online of a 1920. Anybody got one?
All right Paul, you've got to educate me here. What am I looking at and what is a leaved variety? :smile
Here is the definition of a clashed die: In the case of the Mercury Dime, the leaves surrounding the fasces on the reverse are imparted on the obverse die in the fields adjacent to the obverse devices. The result is the "leaved" variety clashed die Mercury Dime.
Well - I learned something new today, so I can rest easy tonight. I will have to add this to my check list of things to look for while looking at coins.
I found a 1920 D with this die clash while searching through a melt bag. There are die cracks along the 1 in the date and above the L in liberty. It's got some honest wear on it, but it's a neat coin! It's hard to believe someone was going to just melt it down for a couple bucks.
It isn't that uncommon an occurrence. Finding a gem may be hard but when the dies clash that is what you usually got, leaves at Liberty's nose. It is also why they have the "broken nose" mercury's. In polishing away the clash marks they also polish away the bridge of the nose.
I found one today. I'll have to check the date and mint. The clash is quite well defined. I'll try to post an image as soon as possible. Donben
