It's just hit or miss. You really have to ask around. I think it depends on the individual banks, not the actual type of bank. For instance I have a US bank that orders for me, but other US banks that I know of in my area won't order. One bank that I was doing my primary checking with cut me off even searching a box of Pennies a week (5th 3rd Bank), so I decided to pull all of my funds out of that bank, and go with a different bank. I haven't completely shut this account down yet. But I did find a different bank that is willing to order a box of halves a week for me. Thus, they become my primary bank. My advice is to go half hunting maybe on a a Saturday morning, and go from bank to bank and see if they have any loose, or perhaps a box on hand they'd sell you. This is what I did. I ended up being that a bank I didn't have an account with offered to order a box for me, so I decided I'd return the favor and open a checking account.

    Btw,

Looks like I might have more boxes coming every week now. I stopped by another branch tonight and they said they'd have 2 boxes for me tomorrow. So my weekly lineup looks like this.

    Wednesday 2 boxes first bank
    Thursday 1 box second bank
    Friday 1 box third bank

Also I talked to a buddy tonight and his friend's wife works at a bank not too far from us, and she might be able to order us a box/week. So I might be looking at something like 5 boxes/week! Hey the more you search the better your odds I figure.

I also found out at my dump bank there is another guy who dumps halves. I usually only dump 1 box every few days. Turns out this guy dumps about 4-5 boxes at a time. They have a coin counter. Teller said this guy will sit in the lobby, open his boxes, and then dump. Sometimes holding up the line. Apparently he is nice enough to let others dump their piggy banks while he is digging into another box. I found this rude, to open boxes in the bank and dump right there. I'll have to ask again, but I'm pretty sure he brings them in with him, that is, that he doesn't order from this bank, then open in the lobby, and dump. That would be extremely rude in my book.

Chester, that is rude and that will be the death of this hobby. Disrespectful individuals who don't understand the value of a businesses time and don't respect the tellers and other customers. I'd be tempted to try and time one of my dumps to coincide with one of his dumps and give him a piece of my mind.

A little note under his windshield telling him that he should probably just open his boxes at home, then bring them to the bank and dump them, along with a knife to his tire...

Can you tell I had/have anger management issues?

Downer night...Got my 2nd box of halves today and $110 in dimes. Two Skunks!

I have 2 more boxes of halves to pick up tomorrow and Thursday, and will have another 3 on Friday. So, I should have a box each day through Saturday and one on Monday.

    Hoping my luck turns!

Merc - I have a local M&T Bank in my area. There is one in Media. Check them out. They have been more than willing to work with me. Very small outfit, but they have a few branches around the area.

My big issue is I have about $600-$650 in capital right now. So, I couldn't grab more at once.

I should also say that they are Brinks boxes. I'm starting to get a bit more familiar with the companies that wrap the coins.

Whether he brings boxes from another bank or not, searching through rolls right there in the bank demonstrates zero couth. Like a junkie who can't wait to get his fix...

If I see him I will have something to say. I agree it is guys like that, that will make it all the harder for any of us to have any fun. A note under the windshield might be another way to go. The slashing tires might be taking it a little too far, but still doesn't mean it shouldn't be done...haha. A little vigilante justice. We could be the Charles Bronson's of roll searching.....haha.

Well I get ****ed too sometimes. Sometimes I wish it were the Wild West out here so we could bring the smack down on some of these clowns.

    Merc,
I totally agree! I'm super nice to my banks where I buy and DUMP coins. One bad seed has to wreck it for the rest of us, out of what.....GREED. There are unwritten rules (or maybe they were written down at one time) where you don't do &*(% like that. Just like you don't run over the pitchers mound after you fly out in baseball.

Agreed - In the short time I've been doing this, I've been handed halves and can just tell when the teller is handing them over that they are not Silver. However, I thank them, put them in my pocket, and head out to my car. I double-check out there and move on. I can't imagine having the brass to sit there, eye-ball them, and hand them back; let alone go through an entire box. Unreal!

Two boxes of halves from B of America...a Brinks customer...kept total of 5 AU or better coins. No silver, no proofs, nothing that made my eyes pop. Yikes.

I was thinking about putting together a photo guide that identifies the various wraps and boxes that come from different companies. While I know how to identify some, I'd like to be able to identify all the companies by wrapper/box.

Anyone wish to assist? (Nudge, nudge, Merc...)

This is for my roll searching finds so it kind of goes here. Picked up three BARELY used Danscos for $10 each. Total of 17 pages in three binders. First one Liberty Half Dollars 4 pages. Second one Lincoln cents from 1921 up through 1995, 6 total pages but I will need to pick up the first page starting in 1909. Then the best one is the dimes binder starting 1892. It has 2 pages for Liberty Dimes, then 2 pages for merc, and finally 3 pages for Roosies going to 1992. 100 years of dimes in one binder, cool to me.

The books are in GREAT shape. Now I can display more of my finds.

Of the last $1000 worth of dimes I have looked through, I have not found a single one. Maybe the coin sorters here take out the silver ? I was told they can do it automatically ??
