I like all of your comments, but I would like to share my reason I like collecting. Yeah, I also think it is edducational and a fun hobby, but the main reason why I like it is because I meet new people! Every since I joined this website .....oh....not too long ago, I have made a lot of friends. I am surrounded by passonate collectors like all of you! And that is why I collect!
I collect to experience an intimate connection to those who came before me, and to conserve the means of that connection for those who will come after me.
I collect coins and movie memorabilia because its an outlet for me from the fast paced life/environment I'm subjected to on a daily basis. It not only calls me, but coins immersed me in history and intrigue of finding the next greatest "center piece" of my ever evolving collection. Essentially, every week is a different and more exciting time.
You express most eloquently a reason to collect. King George V of Britain was a serious stamp collector. Before World War I, he regularly received approval packets from the legendary dealer Stanley Gibbons and Company. When the war began George, wishing to be a serious soldier-king, told the Gibbons company to quit sending the packets. A few weeks later, after the war that all thought would end quickly seemed destined instead to drag on indefinitely, George practically begged Gibbons to resume sending packets. It was a release from the madness and tension of war that the person of The King needed in order to endure. Such does collecting make fraternities that transcend time, place and rank.
