Seller says it's "proof-like"... I am on the fence. http://cgi.ebay.com/1974-D-EISENHOW...46?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item25641511ba
I find it funny and somewhat entertaining when eBay sellers include in their auctions that an item is "proof" or "proof-like" when it is blast white or has cartwheel lustur. Believe it or not, some people actually do think proof coins are just business strikes with extra lustur! If you are going to be a seller of coins on an auction website, you should at least be somewhat experienced and familiarized with these types enough to know whether a coin is "proof-like". -Brian
Another 5 hours and the seller will realize how much hooey they are full of. No way that coin is PL, DMPL, or any other kind of proof quality. It's a well circulated 74 D worth maybe $.25-$.35 over face.
The term "Proof Like" is interpreted differently by many different folks. I recall back in the early 60's where folks actually referred to Proof as a grade level. As for Eisenhower Dollars, the IKE Group believes that there were plans to produce Proof Eisenhower Dollars for 1971 and 1972 but for whatever reason the program was scrapped and any materials related to it were sent to Denver for use on the production presses. This accounts for the existance of the 1971-D RDV-006 and the many 1971D and 1972D coins which were minted on Proof Planchets. These coins DO show remarkable mirrors and do "look" very "proof like". 1973 and 1973 saw the introduction of Copper Nickel Proof IKEs which also had many of their rejected planchets sent to the Denver Facility. Proof of this is in the existance of the 1974D and 1977D IKEs minted on 40% Silver Planchets. For the listing of the OP, the poor scans do not show what most would refer to as a Proof Like coin but for whatever reason, the lister chose that term. No, the coin won't sell but it certainly is not "unique" in the misattribution of descriptive numismatic terms for incorrectly describing a coin which the lister simply does not have the skill nor knowledge to use correctly.
