Hello, well we all know what it is as far as visual goes, but technicallyspeaking, what is it? What makes the actual metal shine? Is it the way the surface structured? orsomething more like the content of the metal itself? Do you know of any threadthat already discusses this subject? Maybe humongous pictures?
Good morning Standfor, and welcome to the forums.......... Yesterday a very interesting site opened called google, On this site you can actually ask questions. Like " what is mint luster " and many many maaaaaany links will appear with most or even all of your questions asked and you can even see Humongous pictures Here is one link I really liked http://reviews.ebay.com/The-Meaning-Of-Mint-Luster_W0QQugidZ10000000001433485
Good link, Siggi. Thanks! Here are a couple of close-ups of Morgan dollars taken with the stereomicroscope that show the flow lines which produce luster and the subsequent cartwheel effect. Chris
Is it spelled out "L-U-S-T-E-R"? I've spelled it "L-U-S-T-U-R" my entire collecting career. Haha! -Brian
Here is a previous thread with photos of luster comparison under a microscope. http://www.cointalk.com/t126215/ Jim
Well, since I've spelled it that way for years, I think I will continue to spell it that way. Old habits usually die slow for me and the transition may be difficult so I'll just stick with the old. Out with the new! -Brian
Very true, very true. I should spell "THEATER" as "THEATRE" from now on. Reminds me of my 8th grade algebra teacher. That is the only thing I remember about it. Why that is, I don't know why. -Brian
