Here is the backstory. A local lady came into my tourist jewelry shop. Picked out about $75 worth of jewerly and saw the little bit of silver I have for sale. Asked if I would buy coins and I told her I'd buy if it was silver. She had a 23 Peace, 43 Walker, 63 Franklin, 47s Washington and 64 Washington and this. I traded her plus I kicked in a couple bucks to try to be fair.

Looks real, not junk, not valuable. But all large cents are cool. Probably a $10-15 coin.

It was in a flip and was sitting in her car in a bag with a bunch of foreign coins and what I bought. Any way to get the surface back to normal without me wrecking it?

Thanks for the help. It is appreciated.

There is a product called 'verdi-gone', you can search this forum for it. But, This coin is a bit too far gone to resurrect. Older collectors would put oil on the coin to blend the green into the background, but I don't think this is recommended. It seems like almost 20% of the large cents out there have been 'oiled.'

Not sure what verdigone does on large cents. This puppy does look rough and I would put it in the range of vf and maybe net it out out G details. Still any large cent is a good large cent.

Verdi-Gone, now called Verdi-Care, can do wonders or very little, depending on the nature of the verdigris.

I can show you some before and after pix of copper that is persuasive. But stubborn, old verdigris is very resilient and difficult to do much about. It has usually done its damage too.

You can pick up Verdi-Care at Wizard Coin Supplies online; elsewhere too, I'm sure.

Oh don't clean it Mike! It's beautiful just as it is! I'll swap you a '64 proof set in a plastic Whitman rectangle for it!

That is a very generous offer I'd quickly accept.

I just thought everybody would like to know that Mike and I made a nice swap and it 's win/win. We each got something we wanted and liked. Mike's a great fellow and we've done other deals and I certainly look forward to more.
Tip of the hat to all who replied.
