Memorial thank you card, Looking for a coin with the subject

As Iceland has never faught any wars has never had an army it is hard to put my self in families shoes. I can not imagine how it feels to have a loved one fighting in a war let alone die in one. I have read many books on the subject the latest band of brothers and for me the bravery of your boys and how proud you must be that I can imagine.

I knew that you had memorial day coming up so I looked up coins related to the subject. That led me to read for some reason how you are supposed to thank veterans and their families. I hope this small card I made does the subject justice.

Any things on coins with the subject would be appriciated.

Thank you Bruce I appriciate your kinds words.

I for one was in awe of the bravery of the young boys when I read band of brothers. History was changed by these boys and they deserve all the respect in the world.

very nice siggi... thank you for your consideration. I haven't served myself but have lots of family involved currently and as far back as the civil war here. My best buddy is dropping hellfire on Afghanistan right as I type this. It is a bitter-sweet holiday for millions if people and it's nice to know there are others in the world who are thinking about our men and women so positively. -Andy

    Thank you Andy,

It must be immensly valueble for your friend knowing that someone is thinking about him at home...

What made me go about reading about memorial day and how to salute familys and veterans was a card I saw when I googled the matter. It said Happy memorial day and I just thought that didnt fit the day.

And from what I read I was correct as to think it is a somber holiday...

Dear Siggi, how kind and appropriate your post is. Sometimes we forget the reason for Memorial Day; many see it as the kick-off to summer, an extra day off work or school, a long weekend. In my town, and many across the country there will be parades tomorrow, honoring different branches of service. Our service in this tiny town will begin in the cemetery..new flags have been placed to mark each and every service person. They will conclude with a 21 gun salute. Everyone in town will be there, it will be somber, and we will all shed tears.

My husband has a flag there, for he was army.

Coins, hmmm. It will be interesting to see what gets posted.

    Regards, Lucy

Thanks Sigi, being a vet I appreciate the thanks from you. However, and I don't want this to sound like I'm unappreciative, but Memorial Day is not about veterans. This day is for remembering the real heros, the ones that didn't make it back from the war. The ones that knew that even though there was a very good chance that they would never see their families again, volunteered to go do what needed to be done. The ones that didn't take the chicken way out and run to Canada when they were drafted.

Lucy, my condolences. I didn't know anybody personally that has lost somebody, but I sort of do now. I'll think about him during the local service.

As far as coins for Memorial Day. the only commem that the mint has put out that speaks to the fallen is the Vietnam Wall memorial. I don't have one of those to post but the reverse of the Civil War dollar I think is appropriate.

DTMenace, sorry if my post was misleading. My husband did not die as a result of service, but something else. I personally choose to honor all servicemen and women, living or dead, on Memorial Day, but you are correct in your definition.

Today is a day to remember and be thankful to all who have given their lives for their country. As far as those who see it as the "kickoff of summer" let them be. As in childhood, it is their ignorant bliss, their carefree attitude and their freedom to be that way that creates unbridled happiness. There is far too little of it in the world, don't quash it. Instead smile and look at it this way:

Their joy tells us that the sacrifices were not in vain. That the freedom these people gave their lives for exists and is very real.

Let those who understand mourn the loss, let the rest enjoy the freedom.

Thanks So Much for posting this Siggi, May people forget what this holiday is all about. It's so very important for us to remember the people who put their lives on the line. Not only for us here in the US, but people all over the world.
We would not be able to enjoy our freedom if it wasn't for those who have past or those we are lucky enough to still have with us.

    Cheers Siggi, and Thank You!
