I am listening to a CoinShowPodacast and he was saying how he used to collect coins because he thought it was fun. Why do you collect?:thumb:
I collect because I love to learn and I love history, I also feel like I was born with a love for coins. Not only that it's a feeling of accomplishment when I complete a set or track down a coin I've been hunting for....
Fun , educational , meet some great people . Did I say fun , beautiful works of art , interesting and I'll still have some money when I'm done .
It takes me to my own peaceful place, allows me to strategize, gives me a sense of accomplishment, & allows me to teach my kids while I learn also.
i really like these threads, type in 'cointalk why do we collect coins' in google and itll come up with a 3 pager on some great answers anyways, i collect coins, and alot of other things too, bacasue of the following -the chance to hold something that has seen 100s or even 1000s of years history -they are great to look at and display -the stories such as The Admiral Gardner shipwreck coins -the 'hunt' for rares -i think im a completionist at heart -they're shiny! rich
1. Collecting gives me something interesting to do. It gives me a thrill when anticipating new shows/purchases (like the Whitman show in a few weeks). 2. Coins have artistic merits that I can't see in most other things. Music is the only other artform I enjoy. 3. Coins have monetary merits that add to my nest egg.
Along with the history, I enjoy the challenge of putting together a series that has been ended decades ago.
The thrill of the hunt especially for errors or varieties. I was born a collector and have collected various things during my lifetime. Also, collecting adds knowledge which keeps one's wits about them. Your mind is always active. Just think of all the other tangets you've gone down because of coin collecting. History, coin composition, geography, etc. etc..
I collect for a lot of reasons. One, the obvious one, is that the coins themselves are just fascinating. They look cool and they give a look into history wich I adore. I mean take my 1898 barber half. Im holding a coin in my own two hands that is 113 years old. Who knows who held it, what its been through, the places its been, etc. Collecting also gives me a sense of community and nostalgia. At coin shows and shops, as well as here at CT, i am connected with a select group of people who share my interest and love, and we can all talk and help each other and become friends. Collecting also provides a lot of fun when it comes to hunting for the coins you like. Wether you roll hunt, go to flea markets and garage sales, visit coin shops, ebay, or shows, the whole process of tracking down the right coin, buying it, and then being able to add it to your collection is very fun and provides a sense of satisfaction. Also collecting is financially safe. Coins dont ever lose value. If you buy a two thousand dollar morgan dollar today, if you keep it inthe same condition, ten years from now you can sell it and get all your money back. It also provides a precious metal investment for when hyperinflation kicks in. I could go on all day about why i collect but i think these are my main reasons.
at school my favourite subjects were history and geography, plus i had already become a collector by the age of 8 and with my brother being in the army my collection soon expanded as he always brought me coins from the countries he visited. but really it is the historical side which interests me most, who has held this before me? how has it lasted so well over the years? the questions are limitless and we are all hoarders by nature..........
I collect mainly for the history they provide. Its just fascinating. I also enjoy are and each coin is a work of art in their own right.
I collect because it is fun and challenging - it also helps relieve the stress from difficult work days. I like trying to find the right coin to go into the collection.
It's like explaining why I like ice cream. I just do. I suppose it might have something to do with my love of history, and being able to hold a piece of that history in my hands. It's a challenge sometimes, and a relaxing, fulfilling venture sometimes. Plus, most of the people are ok too Guy
