i have the 'coins of england and the uk' book infront of me, the definitive guide in this country on its coins, and its states the first known uk coins to start around 150bc, so forgive me for asking, but given its rich history, is there not a potential for a UK coins sub forum on here

im guessing this is mostly a us site, so is there just not enough collectors on here to make it worth it? or perhaps ive missed it and im just being daft :D

if you're a uk resident, or just collect uk coins pipe up and give your opinion, or if there already is one point me in the right direction

(sorry if im being rude being a newcomer and trying to give yall suggestions!)

    thanks

That might upset the Germans (coin collectors)...and you don't want to upset them. :p

But really, I think it would be nice to break out some countries into their own forums. German, Canadian, UK, and China to start!

the history of UK coinage is rich and varied so yes i agree we should have our own sub forum, that must also include the early coinage of ireland and scotland to make it feasible.............

Oh dear ... watched the History Channel, or whatever it's called these days, too many times?
Nah, leave Germany out. We have our own sites, not necessarily in English though. ;)

There's not a lot of sub-forums on here so I'm guessing they don't think there is enough interest to support enough discussion by itself. First if it were me I'd separate the world coins from the ancient. It's a totally different area of interest, and personally I have no interest in one and a lot in the other. Some people will say that you have to draw a line at a year, but I think most ancient coin discussion focuses on Rome and Greece and most world coin discussion is 1600s and up.

While I could see separating out ancient or ancient/medieval, I see more problems with too many sub-sections than too few. For those of us who have some interest in several different areas, it would just make it harder to use and would be frustrating to check several small sections only to find out that there was nothing new. I'd leave it as it is now until the traffic gets a lot heavier.

.... France, Italy, Spain.....I'm positve at least 50 or 100 other countries would volunteer for their own sub-forum

to be honest even though we are growing in number all the time i think there are too few uk collectors to justify any sub forum. Also if every country wanted one then it would start to get crazy. I agree that world coin should have its own part though

with the UK forum it could include, isle of man, jersey, guernsey, alderney, lundy, scotland and pre independence ireland as well as the main stream UK so really it could cater for the coinage of seven different states in one sub forum. as well there could be a forum for each different continent eg, south america, africa, asia, north america, australasia and europe. worth a look at an overhaul of the site to include those sub sections, as i think a general world and ancients section covers such a vast area for one sub forum.............

There is one difference between all those, and a possible UK coinage sub-forum, in my opinion: The discussions here are primarily among Americans - and apparently quite a few British too - and in English. We could have dozens of country-specific sections here, but a place that is then hardly populated (or only by a few US collectors who ask about this or that "foreign" coin) would be counterproductive in my opinion: It deters rather than attracts.

So a British (or "sterling area") sub-forum could make sense, the others don't. Now as for ancients, I do not collect them, and hardly ever read a topic that is specifically about ancient coins. If it is possible to draw a line that somehow makes sense for both European and Asian coinage, I would welcome such a split ...

Do the math. Count over the last week and see how many threads pertained to each proposed sub group. Also count the number of threads that cross over between two. This is my greatest objection to the split. I, for example, do not collect British coins as such but I do collect some coins that are British. I collect old coins to include ancients and medievals. My newest UK coins of interest are Tudor/Stuart hammered and I am equally interested in Russian, French, German, Asian and other hand made issues up to about the 17th century. If you split off a UK section that has 95% discussion of 20-21st century coins, I will miss out on the discussions that would be of interest.

I participate in more than one coin forum but find it a fact that the more often I visit to find no posts, the longer it will be before I visit again. Coin Talk rarely has a day where someone does not post something in the Ancient/World. Numismatic Society and Coin People are groups that go for days with no posts in the World/Ancient sections. If you are bothered by posts on subjects you don't collect, you must be prepared to support your new sub-sections with enough meaningful traffic that people will want to check it frequently. Perhaps there are other UK only venues that will be a better fit to your needs but the current one on Coin Talk seems to be not all that busy including everything in one group. I fail to see how this would improve by splitting it into a half dozen specialities that might get posts every few weeks.

doug my UK collection dates from around 200bc up to and including 2011, that includes scotland and ireland, so where would the stimulation be for me? simple in a forum catering for all british coinage from celtic to modern day. my ireland collection includes hiberno-norse issues, whilst my scottish collection goes back to the time of edward I, but i have never seen them discussed on here? so there is the variance in UK coinage which could function perfectly well in it's own sub forum.

One of the more recent posts I recall discussed Edward I but did not go very deep or cover him as applies to Scotland. I was not even aware he had Scottish coins but thought that period was covered by coins of his associates like John Balliol. We really did not get much action on that post but it was much more active than my post on Elizabeth I this week. I rather got the impression that there was not much interest in old English coins here. I would like to see what gets posted regarding Scotland before James VI/I but would certainly miss it if the few old UK posts were separated out in a new forum that I would rarely visit. CT World/Ancients operates on a pretty much beginner level. I was not aware that we had regular posters who collected the scare material and am so ignorant as to think that all of the early Scottish coins were well beyond our level.

If the current group is split, I would prefer it done by date (World/Ancient and World/Modern) rather than by geography. Are there UK based forums where those interested in these coins post? Ancients only people have Forvm Ancient Coins but people like me who collect things newer than ancient have only Coin Talk W/A so I hate to see it broken up.

sorry for the confusion doug, edward did not have any scottish coins minted for him i meant at the coresponding time of edward I, indeed baliol was a contempory of longshanks and it was around this time that a truly definitive scottish coinage was first minted.
