All mintages - but that is stratified over the whole of the denomination portfolio. Keep in mind that the mint makes money for the Treasury, who is overall concerned with the valulation of the US currency overall. The mint is just a manufacturer of widgits. It just happens that we have to have those widgits to buy other widgits. Given the high mintages of cents (which BTW the Mint calls pennies in their annual report, makes me wanna scream) and nickels, this figure is pretty good. If anyone wants to see the Mint's Annual Report for 2003, goto this link. The other agency is the USPS - Postal Service. Once they figured out how to be profitable, they will never run in the red. Can't say the same for coins. If the Mint's raw costs of goods increases, they will have a tough time maintaining their profit position. It decreased from 2002.
To be honest rbm - I don't remember. But it's certainly not the Post Office - they've been losing money since before forever.
I dunno - they made some in 2003.... $866MM in net capital for 2003. They have actually been in the black from a net operation profit, but their old debt was hurting them until this year. 6.8% profit margin this past year.
The treasury as a whole is profitable. Considering every bill costs an average of 12-14 cents to produce.
Just got back from D.C. By sure chance, I just completed my vacation touring Washington, D.C. with my two sons. We got a chance to witness history as we saw the President Reagan's state funeral with all of its pomp and circumstance. I told my boys to "suck in everything they see" for the were living history. This past week in D.C. was very moving and made me more than ever to be proud that I am an American. Though I am a huge fan of President Reagan, this whole idea about him on our dime and/or the $10 bill is simply wrong. I witnessed enough of the LEFT trying their hardest to show respect for a man that made conservative principles fashionable again. The fallout of politics of who should grace our coins and who shouldn't is going to divide this country further. I am sure our designers can come up with future coins that truly represent what America is all about...that being Liberty, Freedom and her true glory. With that said, it is important for you to write your congressman with your thoughts because the hysteria to honor Reagan on coins and currency is present. We all need to think with cooler, rational and conservative heads when it comes to our nation's coinage and Lady Liberty is something that can bring everybody together.
Mr ZAK - I've been considering informing my congressperson - 1. Put the Atom Bomb (Hiroshima) on the obverse and Truman on the reverse. 2. Put FDR on one side and a person stealing citizens gold and silver on the other. 3. Put Eisenhower on one side and the ST LAURENT Military Cemetary in France on the other side. If wer're going to place any picture on any coin or paper - how about a honoring a person who actually gave his life - in a real war - for our freedom and 'democarcy.' Ronnie Reagan was a GREAT president. But it doesn't supercede the sacrifice given by my brother or my father-in-law.
