1989 Coins of the World

I'm starting a collection of coins from around the world dated 1989 (my birth year). Does anyone else have a collection like that? Is there anything cool, special, valuable, interesting, or just plain weird about anything from that year? I'll post some pictures about coins that I get as they come around.

Beware, the coins I post may be really boring... but I like them.

it is also my birth year. When i find a word coin dated that year i carry it around like a gud luck charm

 

Birthday Buddy!!

My first coin from '89 was the proof set. My Grandpa gave it to me when I was born. When I was a kid I would save 1989 coins, but always ended up spending them or losing them. What sparked my recent interest was my Brother (Animosity) was looking through the world coin box at the coin dealer with me, and I picked out a few 1989 coins for no real reason at all. He bought them for me for my birthday. I don't have pictures yet, but they are coming soon.

 

i always buy a new born baby gift set from the mint for my grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

 

Pretty sure we will like them too. Just try and take good photos.

 

I have been putting together a collection from my birth year too (1970). Since I collect everything in the world, it is pretty big. I'm trying to limit myself to circulating coins only, but a few NIFC have slipped in as well. It is a really neat set, I am pursuing things that I might never ever see otherwise. It feels like 1970 was a banner year for coins though. So many were released, I currently have 413 and a lot to go. Strangely, it is relatively easy to find the difficult ones, low mintage, high value, etc. The low value stuff tends not to be put up for sale on ebay so I can't find the "common" stuff.

 

my fiancée is putting together a set from her birth year. i think that's a cool idea!

 

1989 500 Won

The S. Korean 1989 500 Won coin is a "semi-Key" date of that series, and worth getting in BU.
You can usually pick one up for less than 25 bucks. I know a guy running a website called koreacoins dot c o m is selling it in BU.

The double struck set includes examples of flip-over, die struck reverse, uniface reverse, and even a saddle strike on a struck coin.

I believe this off center set includes all coins that are die-struck-reverse (DSR).
