Gary thanks for responding to my post, the coin is a genuine US mint error certified by NGC MS65 in a holder.
Unplated Lincoln Cent Based on the poll results there are lot of sceptics out there. I can assure you that while there are some fakes out there, the one I posted is genuine. Check it out at Teletrade Auctions www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=3070&lot=2641
Where is Haley_foxhog? It is her Lincoln cent were talking about. Good info though that another was found and certified by NGC. I wonder what it weighed.
Just for the record I weighed 3 of my unplated Lincoln Cents a 1990 = 2.4g, 1982D = 2.4g & 1995D = 2.4g I used an Acculab Electronic Digital Scale model 333. I tested two plated cents and their weight was 2.5g. As for the other 3 unplated cents their in ANAGC, NGC or PCGS holders. I appreciate everyones interest and the information Ken provided as to the weight.
I have a 1989d penny that is not magnetic it weight is 2.4 grams it has be in a little baggie. It has a silver color to it like zinc but it is also a greenish color to it. When it is with other coins it sounds way different then they usually would. There now coin shops around where I live really . Although there is one but I couldn't take it there because they really don't know what they are doing at all because I had some other things like bank notes and they said it was fake and offered me 2 ¢ for it and I just said no I just keep it I went way out of town and they told me it wasn't fake but they would give $500 for it but yet I still have it. That bank note was with this penny that I have along with a few other coins. I know there's something about this coin that makes me really wonder how much is it worth. My grandparents had it put up for a reason away from all there other coins I just haven't figured out why they had the bank note and few coins put somewhere away from there other coins. Can anyone help.
As others have said - if it's SUPER GLOSSY SHINY.... nothing. If its dull, gun metal like.... possibility. If it's very off weight.... possibility. If it is thinner or thicker than a normal penny... possibility. (thinner being more likely better, but not necessarily.) And for the record - if you ever have a coin you think may be valuable: NEVER SCRATCH IT for any reason, especially trying to remove possible plating.... although it's a little funny it was suggested.
There's only one way to assist you, and that is to know what we're talking about; and in this case that requires pictures. What was the bank note that was with the coin? What are the other coins? Lastly, what do they all look like. You put up good clear images and we'll give you good clear evaluations.
It's not off weight. It is supposed to weigh 2.5 grams with a +/- .13 gram tolerance. Billions of these zinc disgrace pennies have been produced. The zinc is very reactive to everything, and I find these dull gray ones all the time. Even without photos, there is more than a 99.99% chance, it's nothing.
