What technique do you guys use for placing coins in an album such as a Dansco? I am always afraid I am going to damage them when I am putting them in. How do you do it?
Subscribing to this thread. I just recently purchased an IS album and found that the slides can get jammed into the pages pretty easily. The easiest way I've found to fix this is to put on a glove and press down on the slide over a coin hole to slide it out - I'm hoping someone might have a way to prevent this though?
Sometimes the slide will be inserted too far by the manufacturer, and it can be hard to remove. Barehanded, it's pretty easy to remove, but then you have fingerprints on the slides. It's not a good idea to use something like Windex to remove the prints because the surfaces of the slides can be in close proximity to raw coins. The best way to remove the slides is to use a pair of tweezers. You should also be carfeul when replacing the slide after the coins are in place. The leading edge of the slide is sharp and can scratch the surface of a coin. The easiest way to keep this from happening is to leave the rear slide in place when inserting the coins, and press the coins all the way into the slot. This will leave sufficient clearance so that the front slide will not contact the coins when it is reinserted. Once the front slide is in place, you can then turn the page over and press slightly on the back slide to reposition the coin so that it isn't touching either slide. Chris
It's good to be afraid. That means you'll be careful. I like Dansco's but I cringe when I slide the plastic over coins. For those albums with snug fit, like Lincolns (Library of Coins), I don't use the plastic at all. But large cents are always loose and moving around. I do what DMiller does, press on the plastic but never over a coin, until just enough is exposed at the page edge to pull it back. Lance. (edited to add: I like what Chris said.)
First I make sure it is flat. Put top of coin in and push bottom of coin with glove on or with soft cotton rag. Of course this is for my liberty nickels. I usually have to use shims for my bust half's or large cents.
